Team Ovarian Cancer: Unstoppable, Together; Riders, Donors, Doctors and Patients
Team Ovarian Cancer was founded to honor the journeys of two courageous women, Mara Castello and Janet Snider, both diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Sadly, we lost Janet 2 years ago and Mara this December. They were both members of the Dream Factory Community, an educational organization that empowers women to live their dreams that Team Ovarian Cancer Team Captain, Nancy Cantor, founded in 2004.
Since the beginning in 2022, Team Ovarian Cancer has been shaped by our members' passion for the cause. Some have ovarian cancer, still fundraise and ride every year. Some have lost a wife, a mother, a friend, or a daughter to ovarian cancer.
This year we had a several new members join, each with their own story and reason. One was Katie Cunningham. She had ovarian cancer but still wanted to join her wife, Erin, who had been riding for the past 2 years. Last year, CandleWick Press, where Katie worked, sponsored our team. Katie was so excited and happy that she could contribute to Erin’s fundraising in that way.
Katie, who looked so vibrant on her PMC page, was called a warrior. Unfortunately, Katie passed away on July 4th and will not be able to ride in the PMC.
At her funeral, we learned so much more about her and why people would say that about her.
She loved people in her life whole-heartedly and never held back her insights and love. People knew where she stood in most matters of importance. She advocated for well-written children’s books that made important points. She loved her family and hometown and kept showing up for things and people who were important to her. Not only did she love her son, Jack, she loved everyone else’s kids as well. She saw herself as an ambassador of goodwill, love and true caring. A good day for Katie was at the beach, feet in the sand, with family and friends, just watching and appreciating the joy that gets generated when families unite.
In a perfect world, Katie should have lived longer. The world, especially now, needs more Katie in it. We also need less ovarian cancer, so that amazing women like Katie can live to make their contribution for as long as possible.
We wish we got to know Katie better. We would have loved to be in her circle of friends. We wish she could have ridden her first PMC with us. In true Katie fashion, her page is still up and open to donations. 100% of all donations go right to the cause and are tax-deductable.
Goodbye and farewell to the form of Katie that touched so many people and hello to the Katie who will always remind us that standing for what you deem important is what makes life worth living.
We ride for Katie and so many others. Can we flip a switch that makes this world a better, fairer and more humane place? Just knowing Katie and the people she loved and who loved her, has us want to do more to flip that switch by supporting the doctors who can actually make that happen.
Please join us as we fundraise, ride, and do our best to treat ovarian cancer.
Team Ovarian Cancer funds Dream Factory Community Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Dana Farber and the money we raise is given to Dr. Ursula Matulonis MD, head of Gynecologic Oncology at Dana Farber. She and her department are at work on a protocol, that our funds support, to enhance the power of Natural Killer Cells to kill ovarian cancer. They are treating patients now. We are a sponsor and are credited with being part of the team that made that possible.
Check out our video that was produced and shown on Channel 4 News and at the PMC Opening Ceremonies in 2022. Three stories of why we participate on Team Oravian Cancer.
Team Ovarian Cancer is unstoppable in our support of the important work of Dr. Matulonis and her team.
Please:
Thank you for your support for all the people you know who are being treated for ovarian cancer and for those you don’t know yet. Many people will survive cancer because of the research we fund at Dana Farber. Together we can make the impossible, possible.
Here is a recording of a meeting featuring Dr Porter and Dr Romee who are working on the Natural Killer Cell protocol.
