The Pedaling Paesans were founded in 1991, ironically, by an Irishman. The Italians, as well as the team name, would come later. Billy Hamilton started riding the PMC 28 years ago, and hasn't missed a ride since. His father lost his courageous battle with cancer at the young age of 47, when Billy was a junior in college. Billy learned of the PMC when he found a brochure in a local bike shop, and immediately thought it was the perfect way to honor his father and do his part in the fight against cancer. Billy recently recruited his son William, who will be riding in his third PMC this year.
Billy’s recruiting mission started many years ago with several members of the Galluzzo family, starting with his brother-in-law John, and John's wife Kim. Next came Tony Galluzzo Jr., John's brother, in 2002. Tony had recently battled and overcame nasal pharyngeal cancer, and he wanted to give back to Dana Farber for all they had done for him through his diagnosis and treatment. Tony recruited his oldest son Anthony III to ride alongside him. In 2004, Tony's cancer came back, and he temporarily put off treatment in order to participate in the PMC again that year.
Tony passed away in October 2016, after an extremely long and courageous battle with cancer. His incredible strength and courage is an inspiration to the entire family. Anthony III continues to ride, alongside his 3 younger brothers, Matt, Mike, and Dom, who all picked up the family tradition of riding as soon as they became old enough. This year, Matt's fiance Michelle will be riding in her second PMC. Tony's wife Donna will be riding in her third PMC, and for the first time, Tony’s youngest daughter Olivia will be riding as well.
Tony’s brother Joe will be taking part in his 7th ride this year. Joe, like Tony, is a survivor of nasal pharyngeal cancer. He is so thankful to have the ability and the health to be able to take part in the PMC, and pay back Dana Farber for all they did for him throughout his treatment and recovery. His motto since his recovery has been “I can, so I will.” Joe’s son Brian has been riding the PMC since 2007 as well.
Pedaling Paesans doesn't consist of just riders. Tony's daughters, Kimberly, Gianna, and Olivia have all volunteered for a number of years, as has Brian's wife Jenn, and Anthony’s wife Caitlin. In addition, Joe's grandkids, Tessa and Joey, have taken part in PMC Kids rides. The team enjoys the support of family every year at the finish lines in Bourne and Provincetown. It is truly a family affair and a team effort. The team continues to grow and now includes several family friends as well.
It really boils down to one common goal, to ensure that one day, cancer becomes a thing of the past. We truly appreciate all of the generous support we have received over the years. With your continued support, the dream of eradicating cancer will become a reality.
