Welcome to the Team Boston Fire homepage!
The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is a bike-a-thon that today raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the country. Since its start in 1980, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised over $650,000,000 for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) through the Jimmy Fund.
After a successful inaugural team ride in 2017, the Boston Fire Department and the Local 718 returns for their fourth Pan-Mass Challenge. Team Boston Fire, a collection of athletes, military veterans and cancer survivors, ride in honor and support of our brothers and sisters who’ve faced, and continue to fight, an all-too-familiar battle with cancer.
Every three weeks a Boston firefighter is diagnosed with cancer, a staggering statistic that ranks 2.5 times the average rate of other Boston populations. Annually, an average of 20 Boston Firefighters develop cancer. Since 1990, nearly 200 Boston firefighters have been lost to occupational cancer.
Why do we ride? We ride for our brave friends, families and co-workers who’ve been in some way affected by this devastating disease. We ride for better care and state-of-the-art research. We ride to raise awareness and to give a fighting chance to an at-risk occupation with a frighteningly high rate of affected individuals. We ride because the PMC is the single most successful charity in the battle against cancer, and the Boston Fire Department is among the leading occupations affected by it.
So if you feel so inclined, we’d be humbled and so grateful to have your support by way of a donation to our team. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the cause!
