Make Way for Molly 2025: “The Need for Funds Has Never Been Greater”

It seems crazy to say that after raising One Billion Dollars the need for Cancer Research Funding has never been greater but Dr. Walensky like so many others in the Medical Research Arena have seen all government funds in 2025 “Dry Up”. So, your contributions have never been more needed or appreciated . Further , The Make Way for Molly Team due to various circumstances has never been more focused but smaller in size .

Chapter One

It has been almost twenty years since Erin and I were told that Molly, our daughter had Leukemia. At that moment we prayed that the medical staff at Children’s Hospital (that would be caring for our daughter) would be brilliant, caring, empathetic professionals and that they would be “miracle workers” if needed to make sure our daughter would be ok. It was not long after that that we were introduced to Dr. Loren Walensky and our prayers were answered. For the first two weeks of Molly’s treatment and extended hospital stay, Dr. Walensky was her attending physician, and he was “amazing”. However, at the end of the two weeks, he informed us that he would no longer be Molly’s attending physician because his real purpose/mission in life was finding a “Cure for Cancer” and that he was in Cancer Research 50 weeks a year. However, he was available to Children’s Hospital 2 weeks a year as an attending physician, in order to help him stay in touch with patient needs. Erin, Molly and I had been fortunate enough that “Our path’s had crossed”. However, I did let Dr. Walensky know it was “a sin” he only did this 2 weeks a year, because his bedside manner was equal to his brilliance, and it was not fair that we would be the only family to interact with him in 2006.

Chapter Two

In 2024 Molly spoke at a charity fundraiser for “Alex’s Team Foundation” . Molly provided her story of Cancer Survivor gives back and how she was so inspired by the people that treated her at Children’s Hospital that she became a nurse at “Childrens” and is providing care,  alongside some of the wonderful professionals that treated her. At the same event, by chance Dr. Loren Walensky spoke as well. I kidded with Dr. Walensky that in 2007 when we first rode in the PMC, I had tried to connect to direct our funds to his research group but was unable to reach him. I also informed him that we had raised over $1.25 million to date that had been directed to “Pedals for Pediatrics” instead. He assured me that if I called in 2024, he would “personally pick up the phone”.

So, I called this year and Dr. Walensky answered “personally” and I know “He is the right guy for the job”. If anyone can make Miracles Happen it is him.

This year unfortunately has been another year to remind us that a cure is still desperately needed as a close friend was diagnosed with cancer and the Strength of the Callahan Family , my wife Erin was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. So, funds for research and treatments in these crazy times has never been greater.

So, the FUNDING NEED HAS NEVER BEEN GREATER and our “Paths Crossed Again” for a reason, to remind both of us that “A Cure is Still Needed” and “We got the Right Guy for the Job”.
