It started in 1997 as a 'dare' or, more appropriately, a 'challenge'. Most of our group had been riding the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) for more than a dozen years. Then one of us decided to raise the bar: you know, we have been doing this ride all these years but it really isn't a 'true Pan-Mass'; we're not cycling across the entire state. How about starting our ride a day early from the NY/MA border?”
The route through the Berkshires would be far more difficult than the actual PMC, but two cyclists agreed to accept this self-imposed challenge. They were driven to the NY/MA border and left unsupported to ride to Sturbridge on the Friday before the official start of the PMC. Their first stop was 35 miles into the ride at Huckleberry's Bakery and Cafe in Huntington, MA. It was filled with its regular customers catching up on local news, playing cribbage, drinking coffee and enjoying some of the best muffins anywhere. Team Huckleberry was officially born, named after this special place.
The 'Huck Ride', as it is now known throughout the PMC community, holds special meaning to the Hucks. Since that first ride over 20 years ago, we always wanted our sponsors to know that we are ‘riding an extra 100 miles for a cure!' Your generous support in this fight against cancer has made the PMC the most successful and efficient athletic fundraising event in the country. 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for cancer research.
The Hucks cannot imagine participating in the PMC without this extended ride across all of Massachusetts, from the New York border to the tip of the cape at the Provincetown Inn. We are committed and honored to ride with your support so together, we can help fund the research that will find a cure for all cancers.
Thank you for helping to make a difference!
