In Memory of Fighter Bob Gabrielski
We created this team in honor of Robert Gabrielski, who passed away from lung cancer on November 30, 2022. Bobby courageously fought his cancer for three and a half years. He was cared for by Drs. Cheng and Awad at Dana Farber's Department of Thoracic Oncology and was profoundly grateful for their thoughtful and effective approach. He was also monitored by Dr. Fromme, his palliative care specialist. Bob was a fighter. He told his doctors that he wanted to try every possible option to conquer his cancer which had metastasized to the brain. In his first year, he survived three separate brain surgeries to remove the tumors. He subsequently completed a regimen of radiation to the brain. When his doctors began to treat the lung cancer with immunotherapy treatments, Bob had an adverse reaction, was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery on his intestin. In November 2019, he was told that without effective treatment, he had only a few months to live. Dr. Cheng went to work to find a clinical trial for which he could qualify. The process of qualifying for a trial is complex and difficult. Dr Cheng was Bob's loyal advocate, arguing in front of Dana Farber's Board why Bob should be accepted into the trial. He began a Phase III trial treatment called Capmatinib as COVID gripped the world. Although isolated and discouraged, Bob never gave up. With the support of his loving sisters, he continued his treatment through the summer of 2020 and miraculously, his cancer stopped growing. For 18 months, Capmatinib kept his cancer in check. Regular scans and consultations with Dr. Cheng confirmed that Bob's cancer was under control. He was able to live a more normal life, although COVID meant that he had to be very careful about socializing . In early 2022, the cancer began to learn its way around the Capmatinib and tumors appeared in his abdomen. His Dana Farber team identified and tried several other chemotherapy treatments which slowed tumor growth but none were as effective as Capmatinib had been. During this time, Bob spent time regularly with his palliative care specialist, Dr. Fromme. They worked hard together to find medications and other strategies for Bob to manage his emotions and ability to accept his diagnosis. Dr. Fromme often gave Bob the courage to continue his fight. By September of 2022, Bob suffered several complications from the cancer and its treatment and was hospitalized twice. With no realistic treatment available and with the support of Dr. Fromme, Bob chose to enjoy the rest of his time with his family and friends. He entered the hospice program with Care Dimensions of the North Shore at the end of October and passed away a month later. During a visit from the hospice chaplain, she asked him what he would do if he had more time to live and he answered I would raise money for Dana Farber. So please help us do for Bob what he couldn't do for himself and contribute generously to our team. All proceeds will go to Dana Farber and will be directed to the Department of Thoracic Oncology.
