I’m excited to be riding in my second PMC this year. I’m riding in honor of so many friends and family that have been affected by cancer, and helped by Dana Farber. I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because, since 2007, 100% of rider-raised revenue has gone directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer. I’m riding in honor of my mother, Marcia, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2016, and for my father Paul, who died of esophageal cancer just last year.
I’m also very happy – and grateful – to be riding this year after 2 bouts of cancer of my own in the last 4 years. In 2021, I was diagnosed with perineural Basosquamous Cell Carcinoma -- a rare, aggressive, and difficult-to-diagnose skin cancer, which spread throughout the right side of my face. After a 15 month treatment regimen of immunotherapy, multiple surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, I was declared cancer free. Then, 2 weeks after last year's PMC, I was diagnosed with a second primary perineural Squamous Cell Carcinoma. While not as invasive as my first cancer -- or metastatic or recurrent (phew!) -- this second diagnosis screamed that WE CANNOT LET UP IN OUR FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. I had 2 more surgeries and another full round of radiation this past winter. Through the incredible efforts of multiple talented teams at Mass Eye And Ear, Dana Farber, and MGH, along with the loving support of my family and friends, I signed up for this year's PMC. The PMC has become my goal. Every year. For as long as I can.
I’m also humbled to be riding with the Arlington Angels again this year, as we collectively reach the incredible milestone of $1,000,000 raised -- in just 6 years! The Angels were formed in 2020 in memory of three young Arlington people that lost their respective battles to cancer far too soon: Patrick Doherty, Matt Griffin, and Catherine Malatesta. All three grew up with my children in Arlington, and we were particularly close with Pat and Matt, and their families. All three are sorely missed, and their presence is always felt.
I'm grateful to be able to give back in some small way to the people and institutions that have given so much to me and my family personally over the years, and to all of those affected by cancer since long before that. I’ve seen firsthand what cancer can do to us, and how places like Dana Farber can take cancer on, and help us keep living our best lives. I’m living proof.
