Why I Ride ...
TeamBrent was created in September of 2004 when then 2 year old Brent was diagnosed with stage iv Neuroblastoma. As we reflect on Brent’s specific journey, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the advancements we’ve witnessed since he was diagnosed. To be clear, he/we have been extremely lucky. Lucky to have great support, great doctors, and just plain LUCKY. When Brent was diagnosed at age two, his specific stage iv neuroblastoma diagnosis had 15-20% odds of survival. Today, as we reflect on our 19thPMC, Brent is 21 and a kid with his diagnosis has 60-65% odds. There is currently more promising research for neuroblastoma cures than there is money to fund it. We are grateful to you for your support, especially as our ride is getting old (yet we stay young).
While overall PMC funds go towards fighting cancer in general at the Dana Farber, TeamBrent’s monies are targeted towards fighting neuroblastoma. We partner with Dr.Lisa Diller MD, clinical director and chief medical officer of Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and Suzanne Shusterman, Institute Physician and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School to allocate our donations most effectively.
We had an amazing weekend for our 18th ride as our pedal partners, neuroblastoma survivors thanks to Trees Planted by Others, cheered us on and helped us overcome the sweltering temperatures. Like prior years, thanks to generous corporate donations managed well, every single cent you donate gets passed on to research - there is no overhead taken out.
Brent is here with us thanks to fundraising/research done before he was born, when the cure rate for his diagnosis was zero. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is NOW. We all rest in the shade of trees we did not plant. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Every cent matters. We make sure it does.
