Dear Friends & Family,
Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) 2025
Another year has gone by, and our family is ever grateful to the doctors and nurses at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) for care I received twenty-seven years ago. My check-up this year at DFCI in the Survivorship Clinic went well. I feel healthy and grateful to be riding my bike again. I will ride this year’s 46th PMC on different route segments on our travels across the United States, culminating with the Cape Cod Rail Trail. It’ll be two years in November my brother Austin, and daughter-n-law Amy’s mother, Kris Springett, lost their fights to cancer. Austin was an avid PMC rider for many years and had a positive attitude. Cancer strikes when you least expect it, and a cure is a must. And because every penny matters, THE PMC DONATES 100% OF EVERY RIDER-RAISED DOLLAR TO DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE.
The abbreviated story by Chuck: Everyone can wear Tie-Dye.
1997 Family living in Alaska. Liz diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma while pregnant. Local healthcare not the best for treatment. Liz’s brother Austin who rode in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) used Jimmy Fund connections to get pregnant Mom into DFCI in Boston. Chemotherapy, radiation, and tons of help from friends and family members.
1998 Beth is born under critical circumstances and Liz achieves remission. The Larcom Family joins efforts with PMC to cure cancer as Patrick and I complete their first ride on a tandem. Our fans wear hand-made tie-dye t-shirts to cheer us on and Team Tie-Dye is born. Liz begins to recover; not possible without PMC, Jimmy Fund, and DFCI. Year-after-year for the past twenty-seven years, we have ridden & volunteered for those fighting and those who have already fought: my brother Austin Toole, Neighbor Tony’s wife Eileen, neighbor Angie, Joe Caruso (aka Joe Would Go!), Katie Weidman, Sister-n-Law Susan Larcom, Kristine Springett, Kim Ceglarski, Maria Splaine, Patrick O’Donnell, Tom Pickert’s sister, Layla Flint, Hannah Wertens, Kevin Hillman, Deb Anthony, Jack Anthony’s sister, Marianne Durgin, Jim Miller, Bill O’Connor, Denise Vieira, Linda (Muessel) Melrose, Aunt Hon, Nap Torpey, Brigid Campbell, Aunt Gerry, Cousin Jeff, friend Katie Jones, Annie Murphy’s sister, Amy MacDonald, Aggie McBride’s Mom, friend and neighbor Lloyd Ripa, Sister-n-Law Thina Dempsey, friend Sarah Ripa, Uncle Larry, TJ’s Grandpa, Sarah Mason, Patty Borges’ Mom and beautiful sister, friend Laurie Erie’s brother Brian, neighbor Katlynn Mathis’ mother, fun-loving Cousin Lyn, Uncle Paul, military friends Jesse Tordillos and Jim Ward, Lisa Jacome, Lisa Railey, Nydia Caruso, Kevin O’Halloran, Karen Agoros, Mark Pacheco, Claire Mey, Steve Wallach, Bruce Franklin, Bob Pattison, Laurie Erie’s brother Brian, and so many more wonderful people. Everyone knows someone affected by cancer—friends, family, and neighbors.
Pan-Mass Challenge - What it is, what it isn’t, and what it will be:
Many of you normally don’t think of donating as an investment, but your money is highly valuable, and you are investing in the future health of the people all around you, and maybe yourself, as my husband Chuck found out several years ago when a very small mole on his cheek resulted in a very large hole as the doctor’s removed a melanoma. So, just like someone donated in the past, we’ve decided to donate our time and money for research, and to help someone get the treatment needed to be around for his or her family. The bike rides host 3,500 volunteers, 6,800 cyclists for a 25 to 192-mile, 2-day event during the first weekend in August every year (Many different rides are available to choose from!).
Last year in 2024 the PMC raised $75 million. Since 1980 the PMC has raised $1.047 billion for the DFCI. It will require the entire team effort by the PMC community in 2025 to reach the fundraising goal of $76 million. We are happy to again help DFCI pedal for a cure. Thanks to your support, Team Tie-Dye has helped yearly with fundraising initiatives, 100% of which goes directly to the cause.

Best, Liz Larcom & Team Tie-Dye ?
The Annual Larcom Family Update…………………………
Chuck and Dempsey: *Second year of retirement is in the books, and glad to say that every day really is a Saturday for Liz & I. *We are now in Coronado, CA helping Megan with Gabriel, born last year, after driving across the country with stops to visit sister Maryellen and Stewart in Decatur, AL, New Orleans Jazz Fest, seeing the Grateful Dead at the Sphere, and visiting FT Huachuca and the Kiefer Estate. We are looking forward to our trip back East and will take a northern route. Our route is not set in stone, but we’ll figure out our stops in between to allow Liz to get bike rides in. *Dempsey, now 9 and considered a Senior, and I will provide support from Althea, the Big Red Van, as Liz rides her way back east. Dempsey has his own seat to lounge in as we travel the nation’s highways and byways across our country, although he refuses to sit or eat while Althea is in drive mode. A fine companion indeed! *Looking forward to lobstering and fishing with Ian as the summer draws nearer. *Seeing additional family for the Newport Folk, a Polo Match, and Salute to Summer should be fun as well!
Liz: *Enjoying weekly visits to Aunt Ann when not traveling. Unfortunately, we miss Uncle (Fr.) Larry who passed away on Holy Thursday. He led a beautiful life of faith and service and added a bit of humor to many stories. *I had a nice little vacation watching Gabriel (Megan/Justin’s first born) in Punta De Mita, Mexico while Megan & Justin participated in Megan’s partnership activities with McKinsey. *Decoupaging shells whenever I can find some spare time is relaxing still. *Gotta love the Bonnies, and we were able to see a couple of games up in Olean, NY and again were even selected (Lucky!) as fans of a game. I am accustomed to the transfer portal, and I anticipate the 2025-2026 Bona Basketball Team, which appears to be remarkably promising. *It was nice to see family and friends at Erin’s Baby Shower. I enjoyed making baby chocolates and shells for guests to take home (#Aquidneckislandinspirations). *Crew Leader for PMC Guest Services at MMA in Bourne, MA is one of my favorite events of the summer!
