Dear family, friends, fellow cyclists, and even strangers that may have stumbled upon my page:
This August I will be riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) for the third time! The PMC is an annual bike-a-thon that takes place across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, raising money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund. Growing up, I watched my dad and uncle ride in the PMC. Cheering them on as they crossed the finish line every summer, my younger self knew that one day I would join them and participate in the PMC.
This challenge is especially close to my heart because in August 2021 I started working at Dana-Farber as a Genetic Testing Coordinator. I am now in graduate school pursuing my dream to become a Genetic Counselor. I hope to help patients and families understand their genetic predisposition to cancer and its related genes. At Dana-Farber I spent my days working with brave patients, world-renowned oncologists, healthcare providers and workers, researchers, genetic counselors, and my amazing team of genetic testing coordinators, which makes being able to give back by riding in the PMC incredibly special to me!
I will be riding with Team PopScicycles, organized by Stuart and Lisa Patterson in honor of Stuart’s father, Dr. W. Bradford Patterson, who played a significant role in the founding and growth of the Division of Population Sciences at Dana-Farber. As Dr. Jane Weeks, a prominent leader at the McGraw/Patterson Center years later, said in his obituary, “Brad was very early in having a vision of cancer prevention and control being a central part of the mission of cancer centers.” Though I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Dr. Patterson personally, I got to see first-hand how his legacy shines daily at Dana-Farber.

Our Team is so honored to have been paired again with our PMC Pedal Partner - Ellie! Ellie is eight years old, and a patient at The Jimmy Fund Clinic. Ellie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia B-Cell at the age of five, and she is currently in remission. Our team is so grateful that Ellie and her family, Leah, Doug, and Annie, have opened their hearts to the PMC cause and to share her story. Ellie and her family are inspirations, and our team will be riding for them on PMC weekend! Please feel free to view the following links to hear more about Ellie’s story: (1) Telethon (2) Family Interview
This ride is dedicated to family, friends, and the patients I come across daily who have been impacted by cancer: those who continue to battle this disease, those who have won their battle, and those who, unfortunately, have lost their battle. I ride in memory of my dad’s cousin Dale, who fearlessly lost his battle against malignant glioma. I ride in memory of my best friend Lily’s father, Moshe, former General of the Israel Defense Forces, who battled leukemia as heroically as he fought for his country. I ride in living proof of my neighbor and loving friend, Nancy, a six-year lung cancer survivor.
I also dedicate my ride to the pediatric patients at the Max Cure Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by the Plotkin family in 2011, following their son Max’s diagnosis of a rare form of cancer known as B-Cell Lymphoma. The Foundation provides financial and emotional support to low-income, military, and first responder families with children battling cancer, advocates for legislative and regulatory changes that benefit children with cancer, and funds research to create a less toxic form of treatment for pediatric patients. It was my internship during college at the Max Cure Foundation that really solidified my interest in a career path that helps adult and pediatric patients fight cancer as well as their family members who are also impacted by this disease.
Although the PMC will be a challenge, nothing compares to the challenges that patients and family members affected by this disease endure. I have set a personal goal to raise $10,000 - a little over $50/mile. Please consider sponsoring a mile or two of my ride, though any contribution, regardless of how big or small, is greatly appreciated and means a lot to me. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber’s mission to fight and find a cure for cancer! I am a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer, and together, we are “Closer by the Mile”! Thank you for your support, I am so grateful!
With gratitude and love always,
Zoe
