It’s time for Team Live · Love · Laugh to gear up for our 10th annual Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC)! On August 6th and 7th, we will join 5,500 cyclists along with volunteers, cancer survivors, patients, family members and supporters for the annual event. The PMC’s goal is straightforward, yet hardly simple: to eradicate cancer by supporting pioneering research and life-saving treatment initiatives at the preeminent Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The PMC is the single largest contributor to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. Last year alone it donated $45 million for adult and pediatric patient care, and 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the cause.
We formed our team ten years ago to honor our dearly loved daughter, mother, sister, aunt and friend, Wendy Holzman Smith. Wendy’s diagnosis at age 44 was a complete shock, but the courageous six-month battle she waged shocked no one. She fought her cancer with the same heart, grace, and love that she shared as a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Two years later, we were again rattled when Sharon, Brendan, and Justin's father, Tom, was diagnosed at age 56. The fortitude and humor he demonstrated in his one-year struggle paralleled his steadfast commitment to his family and friends, and his love of making people laugh through his stand-up comedy. We are fueled by Wendy’s spirit and her desire for each of us to “live, love and laugh”, and also by Tom’s belief that you should “do what makes you happy” in life.
We commit to ride and volunteer throughout PMC weekend to honor both Wendy and Tom, to recognize the growing number of people we know who have been stricken by cancer, to pay tribute to those dear to us who have survived this devastating illness, and to be part of a movement that brings together people affected in a myriad of ways by this disease, in support of the PMC’s mission to provide the Dana-Farber with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers. The research and treatment advances of the past several years represent a vital down payment on future scientific gains. That’s why your help is so critical.
