In just under 2 weeks, I will be rolling out of Wellesley headed to Provincetown as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge. This is my first time taking on the 162 mile ride and, while I'm looking forward to the challenge of completing all those miles, I'm most looking forward to being a small part of the huge impact the Pan-Mass Challenge has on cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund.
I will be riding in memory of my dad, who passed away last year after a five year battle with cancer. When he first became sick, we were lucky to be connected to Dana-Farber through our friend Matt Bergin, who has been raising huge money for Dana-Farber for 30+ years through his Boston Marathon runs. Dr. David Fisher at Dana-Farber was able to help diagnose the specific strain of cancer and lead the development of my dad's treatment plan. Through chemotherapy, radiation, multiple transplants and cell therapy, Dr. Fisher and his team provided care, guidance, and most importantly, hope. They used the latest therapies and discoveries to extend the time my family and I had with my dad.
From those who have finished their cancer battle to those that are just beginning their journey, I have watched far too many family members and friends fight cancer. I will be thinking of all of them as I make my way slowly towards the finish line of the ride. I will be forever grateful and thankful for the bonus time that we got to spend with my dad and my hope is that with the support of the funds raised through the Pan-Mass Challenge we can move closer to a world without cancer.
