Closer by the Mile
On August 4th I will be cycling in my fourth Pan Mass Challenge!
Aside from a grueling 2-day ride of almost 200 miles, the PMC raises money for the Jimmy Fund, an organization that funds research into cures and treatment for cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over the last 3 years I've been able to raise over $18,900 in the fight against cancer with all your help. The photo to the left was taken of me in 2010, day 2 and 120 miles into the ride.

Jim & Brenda Blake
Like so many families, mine has been devastated by cancer so this is a cause very close to my heart. My mother-in-law, Brenda Blake, was diagnosed with lung cancer and lost to the disease in April 2007. Less than 2 years later, my father-in-law, Jim Blake or Pops as I called him, was diagnosed with stomach cancer and passed away in June 2009. I ride the PMC in memory of them both, in the hopes that others will not suffer the way they did.
Christina Mason
Christina is an inspiration, a reminder of what the human spirit is
capable of during times of great adversity. She has battled cancer for too long, she does so with strength, grace, and a smile. She has been amazing in supporting my efforts in the PMC, constantly pushing and helping me to do better than the year before. I'm riding for Christina and know she will keep on fighting.
Jamie Riehle
If
it wasn't for Jamie I wouldn't be riding in the Pan Mass
Challenge at all. Jamie has ridden 4 PMC's, and has raised
over $17000 for Dana
Farber Cancer Institute in the process. Jamie helped me
through the decision
process of my first PMC sign up, encouraged me along the
way, helped me with
training, and tirelessly answered the many questions I had. Jamie beat
cancer in 2004 and 2007 - it's
hard to say, but the cancer came back again at the end of
2010. Jamie won't make it to
the start line of
the PMC this year. With that in mind, I'm riding for him, I know he would be there if he could.
If you ever wondered why I ride year after year, read this, written by Jamie. Seriously, read it. I don't ever want my friends to have to write things like that, but sadly they are.
I hope you will sponsor me as I strive to reach my 2012 goal of $6,400, the fund raising aspect is by far the hardest but most important aspect of the PMC - I need all the help I can get! (:-) As part of the donation process, please consider joining my "paceline" as a virtual rider, this empowers you to help me raise money without committing yourself to a fund raising minimum. Power in numbers, it really works! (:-)
Sponsor me here by clicking the "DONATE TO MY RIDE" button below. This year 100% of the money I raise will go to the LIVESTRONG Survivor Care Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping cancer survivors with the physical and mental challenges that the years after cancer treatment can bring.
Thank you so much for any help you can give, I really appreciate it! (:-)
