Why I Ride ...
On August 6, a group of Ropes & Gray colleagues and I will bike 77 miles along the shores of Cape Cod as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge, a bike-a-thon that raises funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I am dedicating this ride to my mom, who was recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. I am grateful for my mom’s “best” worst-case scenario, but there remains an uncertainty that comes with any cancer diagnosis. I know I am not the only one among my network who has grappled with questions like: “will treatment work;” “what are the side effects and their severity;” “will pre-existing conditions be exacerbated by treatment;” and “what if treatment doesn’t work?” While I am not capable of finding a cure for cancer or otherwise developing treatment that would mitigate this uncertainty, I am capable of fundraising for one of the world’s pre-imminent cancer institutions and its researchers who can.
