As I gear up for my 6th year participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), my commitment to the cause is stronger than ever. I ride in honor of my courageous pink sisters, including Judy Levine, and in unwavering support of my sister-in-law, Kathy Murdock, and my dear friend, Heidi Fischer - the inspirational leader of Heidi's Heroes. My journey also carries the spirit of Ally, George, Nadia, Mira, PJ, Ashok, Rick, Beth, Eric M, Lori, and Gayle, among countless others whose lives have been impacted or taken by this relentless disease.
The statistics are alarming - 1 in 8 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This stark reality underscores the importance of regular mammograms, especially given that 90% of those diagnosed have no family history of the disease. Early detection was crucial in my own battle with cancer, highlighting the lifesaving potential of timely screenings.
The PMC holds a special place in my heart for its unwavering commitment to cancer research. With 100% of rider-raised funds directly benefiting the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we are part of a powerful movement to find a cure. The journey is long, but our resolve is unwavering.
Heidi's battle with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer, a rare condition that gained attention with the diagnoses of Steve Jobs and Aretha Franklin, has only deepened my dedication. Thanks to groundbreaking research and treatments developed at Dana-Farber, Heidi continues to live a full life. However, the fight is far from over. Your support can propel us toward the next breakthrough, offering hope for a cure.
On August 3, I will join countless others in this meaningful ride, propelled by the generosity of friends, family, and my employer, MathWorks, which generously matches staff donations. Your support, whether through donations or encouragement, means the world to me.
In a gesture of solidarity, I would be honored to wear a ribbon bearing the name of your loved one affected by cancer. Please share their name with me, and let's carry their memory or fight together.
While I hope you and your loved ones never face this battle, know that I am here to support you in any way I can.
Thank you for standing with me in this fight. Together, we can make a difference.
