Why I Ride ...
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading the charge to beat cancer. This year we will surpass $1 Billion in cumulative funds raised to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure. Saturday I will be riding approximately 84 miles from Wellesley to Bourne with three members of Team Cambridge Savings Bank and thousands of other riders. I'm extremely proud of how the bank has stepped up to support the team and this great cause. Our team captains have done a great job leading and supporting our training efforts.
The reasons why we ride are as diverse as the 6,000 + riders and the countless number of volunteers and supporters such as you that support the PMC. Each story is uniquely personal and compelling in its own right. However, sometimes it the unexpected moments that remind you why you're doing this. In 2019 I had such a moment. I experienced a bad cramping session about five miles from the finish. When I finally got back on the bike and reached the finish all I wanted was to hit the shower and relax. A volunteer offered to help me find my bag, but I told him I was all set. Then I read his nametag and noticed he was from North Carolina. I stopped and began to listen. He was a cancer patient who was giving back by traveling to Massachusetts and volunteering for the PMC. He told me that the treatment he was receiving in North Carolina had been developed at Dana Farber. Then he thanked me for riding my bike. Incredible!! Suddenly the pain in my cramping legs was insignificant.
It's moments like this that remind us all why we do this. I'm honored to do my small part in beating this disease and greatly appreciate all your support.
