Every year for the past 19, I reluctantly commit to this ride. It is called a challenge for a valid reason: It is not easy, it's often hot as heck, it rains, and it always tests my strength and endurance. However, when I would get on the road and see it lined with cheering survivors and supporters, I would never doubt that on my bike is where I should be. My favorite sign was I am alive because of you! It is so powerful, even though I know it is not I who saved him, but the collective efforts of this event and what happens when the money arrives at Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund. 100% of the money raised goes to Dana Farber's tireless fight to cure cancer. This is why I ride.
Our team, Red Sox Team 9, was named in honor of Ted Williams who lent his name, energy, and celebrity to elevate the Jimmy Fund through partnership with Dana Farber and the Boston Red Sox.
I ride for my family members and friends who have survived, and those who have not. Our family is much smaller because of cancer. We have lost our grandfather, step father, step mother, mother. and so many friends to this dreadful disease. We lost our cherished friend Dr. Carolyn Kaelin. This kind, gentle force of nature was not just a friend, but a prominent Dana Farber breast cancer surgeon who fought the fight and saved many lives, yet lost her own to cancer. She was also the person I rode with in my first PMC.
I am grateful that my husband Larry has been spared twice thanks to the world-class medicine at our doorstep in Boston. Thank you Dr. Lee Nadler and team for saving Larry's life over 35 years ago. Now, I also add a new team to thank: Dr. Toni Choueiri, Steven Chang, and Adam Kibel, who are currently delivering world-class treatment to Larry in his current battle with kidney cancer.
This year, the world is joined in a collective crisis and the PMC riders will all be creatively doing our work virtually...no injury or scheduling conflicts to provide an excuse for anyone. As many people and sponsors are hard hit financially, the challenge becomes shifted to this over any physical one. The need for treatment and research, however still remain.
My virtual ride this year, is dedicated to my husband who continues to be dedicated to Dana Farber as a board member, Chairman of The Jimmy Find...and as another patient- full of hope for a cure.
