Why I Ride...
On August 3-4th, I will join more than 5,500 cyclists in the 34th Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a bike-a-thon that raises more money for cancer research than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. Over the past 33 years, PMC cyclists have raised more than $375 million. My ride will be over 192 miles that stretches from Sturbridge to Provincetown, MA. I am excited to be a member of "Team Path to the Cure", one of only 4 teams in the PMC, that rides for Pediatric Oncology. 100% of our donations will go directly to Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center, the top-ranked pediatric cancer and blood disease program in the U.S. (http://www.teampathtothecure.com/)
I am honored to dedicate this ride to my pedal partner, Hannah O'Brien (daughter of my colleague, Tom O'Brien). At the age of two, Hannah was diagnosed with an anaplastic ependymoma brain tumor and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation over the course of 4 years. After a long and courageous battle, Hannah has been cancer-free thanks to the research and innovative treatments that have been funded from generous donators and teams like us. Hannah's tenacity and strength along with her family's constant love, perseverance and support is a true inspiration.
Cancer is a complex disease that has affected many of our friends and family at some point in our lives. With persistent and innovative science, breakthroughs will continue to be made at places like the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center. I look forward to the challenge of the ride, but know that my challenge pales in comparison to those fighting this disease.
Thank you in advance for your support as we race to find a cure!
