This is my 17th year riding in the Pan Mass Challenge. Why support us? Why support our team, FLAMES? Here’s why it matters more than ever.

REDUCED FUNDING. As you likely know, funding for medical research is being drastically reduced. 100% of the funds raised by riders in the Pan Mass go directly to the support the work done at Dana Farber. SCIENCE WILL ALWAYS WIN. We need the best in scientific discovery to move forward, and it will happen. IN THE SHORT TERM, we will feel the pain in losing our young scientists, the eager minds with the most promising treatments for the future. These emerging leaders need funding to push their ideas and research forward. This is where cuts are happening. The impact of these ideas remaining ideas and not being funded will be felt acutely over the next few years. The FLAMES support these upcoming scientists! We are funding THREE FELLOWS WITH PROMISING IDEAS/TREATMENTS! In the past, we have funded one and sometimes two FLAIR winners. The doc/scientists and researchers we support receive entries for funding support from Fellows, and they select the winner(s). Our funds support the salary and needs of these Fellows for a year. This year, due to the reduction in funding, our team is supporting THREE FELLOWS. When we host the Doc Night (May), the Fellows come back and report what they accomplished. It is awe-inspiring to hear exactly where our collective FLAMES FUNDING GOES. And this is an incredible differentiator for you to share with your donors. The Fellows we support have gone on to become leaders at NIH and other major organizations. One discovered a molecule, and on and on.

RE-ENGINEERING DRUGS FOR MORE EXPANSIVE USE.

The doctor who saved my life, Dr. Dan D’Angelo, shared examples of drugs that have been used for years and the research and discovery our team has help fund to support new uses for the drugs when combined differently. The medicines that support blood cancers lend themselves to many other cancer treatments. The results of rethinking current drugs and new combinations have been a catalyst for treating more resistant cancers. Our funds support this!
