Why I Ride ...
In 2001, my friend Jonathan asked me to join him in riding from NY to Boston in the Northeast AIDS Ride. He presented it as an opportunity to do something good for someone else, when so much of our lives are lived for ourselves. It was an amazing experience. The ride was incredibly challenging and the fundraising difficult, but the experience was unforgettable and unlike anything else I've done in my life. The spirit and enthusiasm of our fellow riders, the support staff and the thousands of people who lined the roads to cheer us every mile of the route made the ride an experience of a lifetime. I will never forget one of our fellow riders; he rode the same bike as most of us, but he had only one leg. How he did what we did is miraculous.
For the past 20 years, Jonathan and I have been riding in the PMC. The PMC benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Center which provides research and care for cancer victims. As many of you remember, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer some years back and thanks to successful chemotherapy and the availability of drugs, her cancer has now been in remission for more than 25 years. Way to go, mom!
To most people, cancer is one of those terrible diseases that we tend to just accept as part of life; it can happen to anyone and there's not much we can do about it so let's just hope for the best. We all know people who have either had it and survived or, sadly, have died from it. But I believe that by riding in the PMC and supporting organizations such as Dana-Farber we can eventually find a cure for cancer. That's the reason I continue to do the ride each year and plan to for many years to come.
Thank you for considering a donation to support my ride!
