This year's 2024 Pan Mass Challenge has been branded the One in a Billion ride, as the PMC is on the doorstep of crossing the $1 Billion lifetime fundraising mark. We are headed back to Sturbridge in August again as our lives continue to be touched by cancer through family members, friends and their families.
This year I will ride in my 13th PMC. I will be 'riding to raise' for the eighth time in loving memory of my aunt, dear friend and life mentor, Sharon G. Gallagher, who passed away in early February, 2016 after a valiant 15-year fight with cancer.
Sharon was one of my top supporters in life, as she was for many others. She was a tremendous person, a quiet altruist and she lived an examplary life by every measure. Sharon was in large part my inspiration for riding the PMC initially and she was my first call upon arriving in Provincetown on Sunday each of my first four years riding.
I strongly believe that the advances in cancer research that the PMC supports greatly lengthened Sharon's life and added to the quality of that extra time, which in our case included a final Holiday Season '15 of immeasurable significance.
In addition to riding for Sharon, I am riding for a 13th year as a proud member of Equip Henry, named for the son of two University of Vermont '94 classmates of mine, who has has fought cancer since the day he was born. The PMC and the efforts that it supports have helped Henry and his family tremendously. Now 18 years old, Henry not only defied great medical odds thanks to the medical research, technology and professionals that the PMC supports, but he also completed high school, is headed to Wake Forest and will ride in his 3rd Sturbridge to Provincetown PMC and was the first Equipe member to cross the line in PTown last year! A remarkable feat for an 18 year old.
Of last year's tremendous achievement of $75 Milion raised, 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure for Cancer. Thank you again for your support of this great fight against Cancer and Vive le Equip! -- Rob
