Recently my Friends and I were on a PMC training ride. These days most of our rides are gravel rides. A mix of gravel roads, trails and even some pavement. We are lucky to live in an area that has conservation land. The bonus is we get to ride on this land. This particular day we were in a suburb west of Boston and happened to be passing an acquaintance's home. I had heard he was moving and as we rode by he was out on his back stoop. Quickly I notified the group I was stopping and turned up his driveway.
On a beautiful afternoon, he was in the middle of emptying out his house to move. As you can imagine he had a bewildered look on his face as I approached with sunglasses, helmet and spattered in dirt. An interruption was the last thing he needed. Moving is one of life's greatest stresses, marriage, divorce, childbirth and as I can imagine, cancer.
We exchanged hellos and he said I can't think of your name but I know your are a "PMC Guy". "PMC Guy" didn't hit me at first. I laughed and reintroduced myself. Out there in our world there are many "PMC Guys", riders, volunteers and supporters. It is a name I am proud of. This was a sound that made me feel good.
Our parents lovingly give us a name. In a couple of decades, my name will be a few blurry photos of a guy who once had hair and family has carried on. Dana Farber and The PMC will not just be a blurry photo. They will be known for curing cancer and saving lives.More and more everyday.
Hopefully you have enjoyed my story as much as I did writing it.
