Dear Family and Friends,
I am very excited to announce that I have registered for PMC 2024! This will be my 10th year raising money and pedaling 192 miles to help fight for a cure for cancer.
Why I Ride in 2025: A Tribute to Mr. Haight and Mrs. Haight
As I prepare to embark on my PMC 2024 journey, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact certain individuals can have on our lives. Two such people who touched my life in immeasurable ways was Mr. Jeff Haight and Mrs. Haight. This year's PMC is not just about conquering miles; it's about honoring a memory; it's a tribute to Mr. Haight, who inspired me, pushed me to be my best, and left an indelible mark on my life.
In 2019, the world lost Mr. Haight to his courageous fight against cancer.
August will be the 6th year of Mr. Haight’s passing. While years have passed, the impact he has had on my life hasn’t diminished. I think of Mr. & Mrs. Haight often, frequently laughing at the quote he used to mock me with in jest. One time in highschool, I was putting on makeup before a soccer game and he jokingly rolled his eyes and said, “look good feel good; feel good do good.” (He said that this was a quote from one of his other former soccer players). I still laugh whenever I’m putting myself together before an athletic activity. Throughout my time at Westford Academy, Mr. Haight was my soccer coach, trip leader to Yellowstone, and AP Bio teacher.
Mr. Haight was more than a teacher though; he was a beacon of knowledge, a guide through the intricate wonders of biology, and a mentor who saw the potential in every student. His classes weren't just about textbooks and exams; they were journeys of discovery, fueled by his passion for teaching and his genuine care for each student's success.
On the soccer field, he wasn't merely my coach; he was a motivator who instilled the values of teamwork, resilience, and the joy of the game. His leadership extended beyond the classroom and the field—leading me and some other students from Westford Academy on an unforgettable trip to Yellowstone with Mrs. Haight and a few other amazing teachers, where the wonders of nature mirrored the wonders of his teaching. The memories from this trip will last a lifetime. I was recently in Wyoming with some friends to ski and visited the hostel we stayed in at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Rest assured, my name, along with a couple of other students from our trip are still written on the ceiling in the common area from 2012 (don’t worry, this is a right of passage at the hostel). On my recent visit, I was able to tell my friends about all of the breathtaking hikes, geysers and animals we saw throughout our adventures in 2012. Mr. and Mrs. Haight opened my eyes to the beauty of a world I knew very little about, and I will be forever grateful.
As I take on the PMC challenge, I do so in honor of this incredible man who dedicated his life to education, inspiration, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Dedicating this ride to Mr. Haight is my way of ensuring that his legacy lives on. His kindness, intelligence, and caring nature deserve to be remembered and celebrated. I ride to keep alive the lessons he taught me—lessons that extend far beyond the realms of academia.
Cancer can never diminish the impact he had on countless lives, including mine. Through this ride, I aim to channel the strength and resilience he exemplified, turning the sorrow of loss into a powerful force for good.
