On October 5th, I will be participating in the PMC, an annual bike-a-thon to raise money for live-saving cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Institute. Located in Boston, Dana-Farber is ranked the #4 cancer hospital in the world and is the founding member of Harvard's Comprehensive Cancer Center. As of this year, the PMC has raised over $1 billion since 1980 and raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the U.S. 100% of rider-raised revenue will go directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's commitment to finding a cure.
Last year, I rode 85 miles alongside a group of high school friends (Team Next Generation) from the Boston area to Cape Cod. It was an incredible experience, and I was so grateful to have the opportunity and health to be able to participate. Collectively, our team of around 80 riders raised nearly $600,000! Tragically, cancer has directly impacted many family members and close friends of those on our team. It is the rapid advancement in cancer research - driven forward by Dana Farber and funded in a large part by this event over the past few decades - that gets us excited to participate.
This fall, I will be riding as part of Team Next Generation again, but this time alongisde a group of friends in Texas! We will be participating in the PMC Reimagined Ride on a route starting in Dallas and ending in the infamous Forth Worth Stockyards. We will be biking on behalf of our Pedal Partner, Sophia! Sophia is only four years old and is currently battling Choroid Plexus Carcinoma. She is an animal lover, and especially loves her dog, Maverick. We are also SO excited to report that King, our Pedal Partner for the past three years, has conquered his battle with Leukemia and is loving pre-school. We are inspired by these amazing, strong, and courageous children each year.
Everyone has a purpose and is touched by cancer in one way or another. We hope to change this and to combat this awful disease one mile at a time.
