Why I ride the PMC
This will be my third year riding in the Pan Mass Challenge, which is the largest charity event supporting cancer research and treatment worldwide. Each year the generosity of those who support riders raises millions of dollars for research at the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute in Boston. Those donations have helped Dana Farber as one of the leading cancer research institutions, and Dana Farber is involved in the discovery and development of 1 out of 4 new cancer medications. Much progress has been achieved, but so much more is needed.
My goal is to raise $6000 for the PMC, and 100 per cent of every donation will go to Dana Farber. I hope you will be as generous as you can be. Cancer research is expensive. Serum needed to grow cells for early-stage drug discovery costs 1000 dollars per liter. A single mouse used in preclinical trials could cost 50 to 200 dollars depending on the type of mouse needed. Each experiment needs many mice, so the total cost for a single experiment can be very high. Your donation helps the research to continue, and is greatly appreciated by the many people who rely on research that gives hope to them and their families.
This year I will ride 192 miles in two days from Sturbridge to Provincetown. I will ride in memory of those we have lost, in hope for those who are currently being treated, and in thanks for those who are cancer survivors. Together, we can help research scientists continue their work for so many people in need, and give continued hope for their families. It is a way to give hope to our children, and our children’s children, that perhaps someday a diagnosis of cancer is not a message of fear, but of reassurance that there is a team that can help a loved one move on to a healthy life.
Thank you for your kind support and for bringing us all closer by the mile!
Be well, stay well,
Martin
