Cancer has had an impact on all of us in one way or another. The circumstances are unfortunate but the prevalence of Cancer diagnoses among loved ones are a reality in today's day and age. This year has been a difficult one for our family. In July 2023 my wife, CC was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, her doctors suggested that she undertake a mammogram and fortunately for us, they caught it early. As many know, the treatment process is cumbersome and exhaustive. After several months of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, CC is cancer free.
This wasn't our first experience with the C word. In 2016, CC was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That was our first dose of reality and as a young woman living in NYC, it provided a different perspective on the world for us (we were not yet married and had been dating for two years).
Despite the countless hospital visits, treatments, bloodwork, anxiety and fear of bad news, we are through the other side and have been blessed with an amazing family. Our daughter Crosby (4) was born in 2020 and Romily (2) are reminders of not only how wonderful life is, but how amazing the medical system and all of its constituents are. Our teams of doctors, nurses, therapists, etc. are some of the most amazing people in the world and they are truly the only people I can think of that are trying to put themselves out of business through research.
I would be remiss not to mention my father-in-law, Bill, who passed away after a battle with Metastatic Melanoma and another one of our dear friends who is currently undergoing a courageous battle with Glioblastoma.
I am riding with Team CRUS11TOUR which is in honor of Davey Hovey who was 25 when diagnosed with Stage IV Multiforme Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer and unfortunately succumbed to the illness after a 16-month battle. I've attached our team's mission statement and Davey is remembered every year through this ride. Please see below mission statement with more information on Team CRUS11TOUR and all of the amazing accomplishments they have made in the fight to battle cancer.
The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country - $972 million since 1980 and a record $72 million in 2023 alone! In 2024, the PMC is positioned to cross a monumental $1 billion in cumulative fundraising for Dana-Farber. This success is the result of a lot of people riding for and caring about a cure. And because every dollar matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to Dana-Farber.
For these reasons, I am a supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. Last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure. Please help me in supporting the PMC and its cause to fight cancer.
I would like to dedicate this year's ride to my wife CC, her father Bill and the Carey family.
Sincerely,
Matt
MISSION:
Our mission is to raise critical funds to support brain cancer research with a specific focus on Glioblastoma. This is a niche brain cancer where research funding and pharmaceutical support is limited. 100% of the money raised through CRUS11TOUR goes to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for brain cancer research, specifically being conducted by Davey’s doctor, Dr. David Reardon. The two funds, Current Use and Endowed, have been established in Davey’s memory and are named the “David Hovey CRUS11TOUR Fund.”
BACKGROUND:
CRUS11TOUR is the name that David (Davey) Hovey gave to his battle against Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. CRUS11TOUR is derived from his determination to “crush” this horrible disease and incorporates his St. Lawrence lacrosse number, “11,” as well as his love of golf and the PGA Tour.
Davey grew up in Simsbury, CT and Chatham, MA in the summers. He graduated from Westminster School and then St. Lawrence University, where he captained the lacrosse team in 2013. Upon graduation from college, he moved to Boston and worked at Arnold Worldwide as a Marketing Manager on the Titleist account.
Davey was 25 years old when he was diagnosed in October 2015 and he fought bravely through 5 brain surgeries, over 20 seizures, and many rounds of treatments. Sadly, Davey passed away after a courageous 16-month battle. During this time, he partnered with Golf Fights Cancer, raising substantial funds through participation in their 100-hole Golf Marathon (June 2016) as well as initiating a 9 member Boston Marathon Team (April 2017).
He left behind a loving family and many close friends, all of who admired his grit & grace and have vowed to keep his CRUS11TOUR legacy alive. His strength and competitive spirit have motivated many to raise money for important brain cancer research. Davey taught us many valuable lessons during his battle with cancer: the importance of family and friends, giving back, and always to “keep the faith”!! CRUS11TOUR never ends and has raised $6.2 million since June 2016!!
NEXT STEPS:
Our primary focus in 2024 will be the return of Team CRUS11TOUR to the Pan Mass Challenge- 7th Year. Our Team raised $1,272,674 in 2023 (a new team high!!) and a 6-Year Total of $5,091,604 for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Once again, our fundraising efforts will be directed to brain cancer research and related entities at Dana-Farber in the fight against Glioblastoma and overall cancer. Additionally, we will remain actively involved with Golf Fights Cancer, the Boston Marathon, Haymakers for Hope and local paddle tennis events. We encourage any additional events that individuals may be impassioned to organize in order to bolster our mission.
