I have seen first-hand how cancer has affected so many of my friends and family. I have had aunts, uncles and cousins all pass away from different types of cancers. I am riding for both the memory and continuous support of all those who have been affected.
I am riding on Team Boston Fire in support of raising awareness for occupational cancer. Every three weeks a Boston firefighter is diagnosed with cancer, a staggering statistic that ranks 2.5 times the average rate of other Boston populations. Annually, an average of 20 Boston Firefighters develop cancer. Since 1990, nearly 200 Boston firefighters have been lost to occupational cancer. The PMC is the single most successful charity in the battle against cancer, and the Boston Fire Department is among the leading occupations affected by it.
I ride to remember those we lost, to raise awareness and to give a fighting chance to an at-risk occupation with a frighteningly high rate of affected individuals, and to honor those fighting everyday.
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
