I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading the charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure. My reasons for riding the PMC are many but they stem from a conversation I had about 25 years ago. Another young mother, new to town, spoke of the Ragbrai, in Iowa, her home state. Our common interest in biking became one of the many things we’ve shared throughout our friendship. She has always been such an inspiration to me in many ways especially how she has handled her cancer diagnosis and years of treatment. Having the Dana Farber Institute and qualified doctors so close by and providing her care, makes me deeply indebted to them.
In 2012, when Jan said that was the year for riding the PMC, I said “Count me in!”. This year Janice Thoen is again the captain of our team, Four Goodness Sake. We will be volunteering on Friday and taking part in the Wellesley to Wellesley, 50 mile ride, on Sunday August 6th. Our team is riding because we want to do something for those who have, or will have, a need for the type of care Jan receives. I am also riding in memory of my mother, Ingrid Scheible, who died from pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2004. She'd probably think I'm crazy, but she'd be supportive and proud that I am doing it for such a good cause. Cancer is a non-discriminative disease and we all know someone who has lost their life to it. So, I'm riding because my current state of health, which I know is temporary, allows me to. I can put my efforts and energy towards helping those that suffer from cancer. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to do something I enjoy on their behalf.
By donating to PMC to sponsor my ride, you are also supporting the efforts of countless people doing research on cancer and caring for those that have it. As I join the many riders taking to the roads in preparation for the ride, I am grateful for the opportunity to do my part and I greatly appreciate your support. Together we can all face whatever the road ahead has in store, knowing we have helped those with cancer.
