Having worked at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for the past twelve years I truly appreciate the huge impact that the Pan-Mass Challenge has made on cancer care and research. Every year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure for cancer.
The route of the PMC passes through my hometown of Charlton, MA and I’ve watched for many years the awesome sight of thousands of dedicated cyclists pedaling by at 5:30 AM. It is also inspiring to witness the throngs of people lining the roads in the early morning darkness on the first Saturday in August to cheer on their favorite riders or simply to hold signs that say “Thank You”. I have also participated as a volunteer at the Sturbridge start and never cease to be amazed by the tremendous dedication and hard work of the thousands of volunteers across Massachusetts who make it all happen.
Starting on Saturday morning, August 6, 2016 I will be doing the two-day Sturbridge to Provincetown route and will be riding as a member of Dr. Eric Winer’s ‘Women’s Oncology on Wheels Team’ (Team WOW3) in support of the Dana-Farber Women’s Cancer Program.
I ride in honor of a dear friend who is battling cancer and in memory of family who have succumbed to this dreaded disease, particularly my brother Bobby, Uncle Bo, Uncle John, Aunt Claire, Uncle Sonny, Aunt Gaby and Raffaele. Thoughts of them and the pain they endured motivates me to continue on.
