Summer is in full swing and with just about 300 training miles under by belt, I am very far behind with my training and my fundraising! You may of seen on the social media circuit that July 4th weekend, Jocelyn's road bike fell of the back of our car going 60mph and went to bicycle heaven. Fortunately, a trip to Bike Zone and she has a new, very slick blue Cannondale and is back on the road!
Another crazy year has passed, we are living in a new world and I was not exempt...after avoiding it for more than 2 years, COVID got me and Jocelyn early April, thankfully our symptoms were mild and the vaccines and boosters did what they were supposed to...sadly CANCER has persisted through all of this and we can't stop the fight. More friends and more relatives have received devastating news this year and although we have made tremendous progress in cancer treatment...nothing like a vaccine is on the horizon. I am happy to report that my mom who was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in January of 2021 is responding extremely well to her treatment and the cancer has not grown. We know the fight continues, and the mission remains, we are committed as ever! We must continue to pedal!
It's satisfying to report that Team Perry raised over $569,000 in 2021 bringing our lifetime total to $8.9 Million Dollars under the strong leadership of my sister in law Melissa! With your help, 10 Million is in reach (probably in 2023 but we need to start now!). This year's ride will take place on August 6-7th and as of now, we are all systems go to get back to a traditional PMC experience.
If you have supported me in the past...you probably don't need to read any further. If you haven't or don’t remember why I am so crazy about bike riding- here is my story and why we remain so committed to the cause. As many of you know, my sister in laws first husband Perry passed away in 1999 after a short battle with cancer of the small bowel. It is hard to believe that it was 23 years ago, July 4th weekend that Perry and Melissa sat in his hospital room to learn of his diagnosis - we were devastated. They had been married less than 2 years (Joce and I had a double wedding with them) and he was the picture of health! We knew it would be a hard road but Perry was a fighter and we had every reason to believe he would beat it. Four months later, he was gone. It is still unthinkable that Perry, a marathon runner and tri-athlete, lost his life at the age of 32.
Perry gave us some very special and significant gifts during his life and with his passing. First, he gave everyone he met his passion for life and his love and when you are loved you can do ANYTHING! Second, he gave us his incredible spirit of competition and drive and therefore this mission has transcended all aspects of our lives. Third, he gave my sister in law permission to love again, and this has obviously meant everything to me and my family. Melissa is married to an incredible man Joshua Jacoby and has two beautiful boys Max (18) and Ryan (15) Our family takes this “ride” and mission VERY seriously and without losing Perry, I would not be completing my 6th year (it’s 20 for Jocelyn) riding in the PMC and my sister in law would not be leading Team Perry which is on target to raise cumulatively close to 10 million dollars this year! My sister is an absolute ROCK STAR! It is no small feat to manage a team of 50-70 riders who raise hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
This year, Team Perry will once again be paired with a Pedal Partner. Reina is a beautiful 14-year-old little girl who became a master chef and baker during her months at home during the pandemic! She became our Pedal Partner in 2018 after being diagnosed with B-cell ALL, a form of childhood leukemia. After battling for 2 years Reina was in remission for almost 2 years but sadly last summer discovered the cancer was back. Our team supported Reina as she underwent a bone marrow transplant this winter and has been in quarantine for 6 months! I have to give a shout out to my nephew Max Deutsch, who donated a online baking course by the famed baker Christina Tosi of Milk Bar through his online learning platform Studio https://studio.com/christina-tosi-baking. Reina is an avid baker and loved the experience when she was in total lockdown!
Finally, the sun is shining and she is able to get out more and is feeling better. My sister has been able to visit with her a few times and despite the challenges she faces, she still finds a way to smile. Reina's family is so grateful to be part of the PMC family and to have been paired with Team Perry - and I think, what do we do? we just pedal our bikes. But then I think of how those pedal strokes translate to dollars, and how those dollars have funded and will continue to fund the salaries of some incredibly brilliant Fellows who've made enormous contributions to the research and treatment at Dana-Farber.
We have supported many amazing doctors over the past several years and in 2017 our 2005 Fellow was named the new Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana Farber! If this isn't proof of how our fundraising has made a difference, I don't know what is!! Our 2022 fellow has proven to be just as impressive as his predecessors! Dr. Harsh Singh is working in the lab and the clinic to bring novel therapies to his patients.
Ok ... so here it comes! Please GIVE generously if you are able and please know that no amount is too small, I really mean that. I promise to share your generous donation with Jocelyn or if you would prefer to split it, or donate to her directly through this link it would be greatly appreciated https://profile.pmc.org/JD0201
They've made it easy - click the Donate to My Ride button to the right and help us make a difference in the fight against cancer. If you would prefer to donate by check - please make it payable to PMC-Jimmy Fund and send it to my home at 9 Vincent Lane Armonk, New York,
I appreciate your support,
Mike
