Why I Ride ...
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
Inspiration. A big word often used in these times where I get another "good idea". Where it comes from is hard to say, but I have been fortunate enough to surround myself with people who provide this for me. My husband inspired me when he overcame paralysis and went on to run two marathons. I have found it in friends, and numerous families in my school district who have shown courage and strength as they fought back from a terrible, dark time and place. It comes in all shapes and sizes. My most recent came in the form of a kindergarten boy who looked at me deep down into my soul and said, "Thank you, Mrs. De Martini for helping boys and girls who are sick." The words may seem simple, but from a child who had been through several chemotherapy treatments, numerous surgeries, and remains today cancer free five years later, they were ones I wouldn't forget. I believe it was no accident that this child landed smack dab in the middle of my classroom and in the middle of my heart. The instant connection with this family was not only deliberate, but has been meaningful and lasting.
It is an honor and privilege to be part of Matthew's team to raise money for childhood cancer. His father Ralph has acted as a coach and mentor to me. He has not only taught me the physical aspects of cycling, but more important the mental aspects to give more when you literally feel you have nothing left.
Why I ride 192 miles? It's quite simple. For every child and adult who has had to endure the pain that cancer can bring to a family.
When our kindergarten year ended Matthew handed me a little boy holding a gold heart and said, "I am happy to have been in your class. You are in my heart."
Inspiration. It's all around each one of us. If there is ever a doubt, bend down and look into the eyes of a child. You can be sure to find it there.
