Year 3. Where is the time going? As I reflect on the past few years that I have been involved with this event, I found this to be the toughest year to get started and get in the mind set of getting out and getting on that bike. This could be because it was one of the most harsh winters and springs in recent memory. Spring brought a “Pollen Vortex” that covered everything and turned me off to riding. As summer rolls on I am happy to say that I am back into the groove. Only one fall off my bike so far this year, and last week I rode 37 non-stop miles on my training ride--a personal record.
I began my 2014 training about 8 weeks late. I also got a later start than normal on fundraising. When I logged into my PMC account recently, the thing that stood out was reviewing all the names of friends and family who have donated an incredible amount of money towards this charity. I personally have raised $20,000 (and growing) over the last several years. It's obvious that everyone has their own reasons for donating, but we all have one thing in common - - we have been affected by cancer in some way.
This past month marked the third anniversary of the death of my best friend, John Zaffino. I committed to PMC to celebrate John, and have hoped that I wouldn't have to add names to the list of people I ride in honor of. My goal is to raise $7000.
The PMC is our way to help the thousands of doctors, nurses, clinicians, scientists, and support staff that are in our hospitals and laboratories. These are the people on the front lines working tirelessly to make the dream of “no more cancer” a reality.
Please join me by making the PMC your avenue to making a difference in the fight against cancer. While these economic times are difficult for us all, remember that cancer is not slowed by the economy. Even the smallest donation will help in our fight. I watched last year as the donations came pouring in, and was touched by how heartfelt each and every gift truly was.
You may mail a check made out to the Jimmy Fund/PMC sent to my address below or you can contribute online at: http://www2.pmc.org/profile/MB0467 Additionally, if your company offers a matching gifts program, please consider asking them to help.
