Dear Friends & Family,
Over the weekend of August 6th & 7th, I will have completed my 7th Pan Mass Challenge. My commitment to the PMC - and to myself - bicycling 192 miles to support cancer research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Every year I return home both exhausted and exhilarated. As challenging as the ride is, it is nowhere near as rough as the challenge cancer patients face every day.
The Pan-Mass Challenge is an annual bike ride that raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country. Founded in 1980, the PMC has raised $500 million for cancer research and treatment for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. And importantly, the PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause.
This will be my third year riding side by side with my Aunt Lois, Uncle Linc, Cousins Ben & Annie Cornell on team ‘Fat Boys - Slim Sisters'. Yes, you read that right. Our team will collectively be raising funds in honor of a team member who has been successfully treated for his prostate cancer at Dana Farber. Our team funds will be going to help his doctor and the Clinical Research Team at the Lank Center for Genitourinary Cancer at DFCI make a difference in prostate cancer research. Our team’s goal is to raise $300,000 this year alone.
Fat Boys – Slim Sisters has also teamed up with four year old pedal partner, Bea. The PMC pedal partner program is an inspiring way for the PMC community to connect with pediatric oncology patients of the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Through this program, registered PMC teams/riders are matched up with and rind in honor of Jimmy Fund Clinic patients.
In August 2014, Bea was diagnosed with leukemia. Her family was in Children’s Hospital Boston for a number of months with Bea, and she is now getting her treatment as an outpatient in the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Bea was very excited last year to ‘have her own bike team’ and her family loved being part of our cycling community. Bea is doing really well – she’s still getting infusions, monitoring and treatment, and in September, Bea will wrap up her final chemo cycle and will hopefully finish her treatments for good. Bea plans to start pre-school in the fall!
This year my personal tribute is to many family members who have been successfully treated and some who are currently fighting the battle.
The PMC raised $45 million in 2015 and has a goal of $46 million in 2016. I have set my goal to $6,000 this year. Please join our big PMC family by making a donation and helping me get to my goal. Every dollar will help make a difference.
On behalf of those whose lives have been touched by cancer, I ask you for your support. Every dollar counts in changing the future for the better.
Please join me in making a difference.
Lots of Love,
Morgan
