2014 will be my third summer riding the PMC. I’ve now
committed to this for the long run. Last year’s ride was an especially unique
experience. Still miles away from Provincetown, I spotted a young boy on the
side of the road holding a sign: “Thanks to you I’m 5,6,7… 11.” I was so moved
by his simple yet powerful sign that I stopped and talked with him for a while.
I learned that each year he stands in the same spot to show his support of
those riding to raise money to fight the cancer that he has been battling.
As you know, my first ride was in 2012 in honor of my
father-in-law (my “second dad”), Dr. Moise Shems who was diagnosed with Central
Nervous System Lymphoma in Dec 2011. After extensive treatment at Dana Farber, my
father-in-law has since regained his strength and memory and is now in
remission. Realizing how fortunate we were to have the best care right here in
Boston, I decided to ride and raise money so other families’ loved ones can
also be treated.
The Pan Mass Challenge is a 192-mile bike-a-thon to raise
money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, (DFCI) through its Jimmy Fund. This year’s PMC goal is $40 million.
One hundred percent of your donation will go toward the Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute and The Jimmy Fund in the continued quest to find a cure for cancer.
I’ll be riding on August 2 and 3, 2014 from Wellesley to
Provincetown. In order to participate in the PMC, I made a commitment to raise
a minimum of $4,300. I have chosen to have the funds I raise
earmarked specifically for brain tumor research. This is an aggressive goal but with your help I am confident
that I can reach it.
