Why I Ride ...
Aim at the sun, and you may not reach it;
But your arrows will fly far higher than if
aimed at an object on a level with yourself.
J. Hawes February 2013
Dear Family and Friends:
Many of you will remember back in 2003 when I trained and ran 26.2 miles to complete my first marathon and raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma. The entire experience was both emotionally and physically rewarding and I continually find myself trying to think of ways to try and give back.
To that end, this year will be the sixth year that I ride the PMC and the third time that I ride with my husband James. I started riding the PMC as a tribute to my grandmother, Laura Beland, who passed away of cancer on February 14th, 1984, 29 years ago. All of us have, in some way, been touched by cancer -- parents, friends, relatives, colleagues, children. Knowing how far research has come and how far it has yet to go, I decided, once again, to challenge myself physically and mentally and to raise money for this exceptionally worthwhile cause and with an organization that is truly committed to finding a cure -- The Dana Farber Foundation and the Jimmy Fund.
If we knew 29 years ago, what we know today, my grandmother and grandfather (who also passed away of cancer) may have lived to meet their great grandchildren or any number of countless parents and children who fought hard against the disease and would have had a second chance. Today there are many new treatments, but the reality is that people are still fighting the battle and some do not win. My small contribution to helping all those searching for the cure and fighting the disease is found in this small gesture. On August 3rd and 4th I will join the Pan Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) and ride my bicycle 192 miles -- from Sturbridge, Massachusetts to Provincetown, Massachusetts -- and raise a minimum of $4,300.
Since its inception in 1980, the PMC has raised more than $375 million that has been used to improve the lives of those suffering with cancer. It is the largest single contributor to the Jimmy Fund -- supporting cancer research and care at Boston's world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 100 percent of all funds raised by PMC riders goes directly to the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is considered among the leanest of fundraising organizations in the nation today.
Your contribution is 100% tax-deductible and all contributions, regardless of size, are greatly appreciated. You can contribute securely online via credit card, or with a check via mail. The attached form details the steps to take. My fundraising deadline is August 1st , however, if you are unable to contribute by the 1st, I will gladly accept contributions on behalf of the Foundation that come in after that date.
Oh, one last thing, the day of the race, I will ride remembering those touched by the disease. If you know anyone, please send me their names and I will wear them on my shirt throughout the ride. Also, if you'd like updates on my personal training progress and/or would like to know how I finish the ride, please provide your email addresses -- if I don't already have them!
Thanks so much for your help and support! And feel free to contact me with any questions!
Very truly yours,
laura steiglehner geary
