Why I Ride ...
On August 6th & 7th, The Captain’s Crew will be entering their third Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), in honor of the people in our lives who have fought the dreadful disease of cancer. Founded in 1980, the PMC is the largest single contributor to the Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research and care at Boston's world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The event consists of more than 5,000 cyclists, with the option for a one or two day ride, spanning up to 200 miles across the state of Massachusetts.
As most of you know, this event is very dear to my heart as we ride in memory of my father-in-law, "The Captain", who fought a courageous battle against a rare form of cancer known as Urachal Carcinoma. His positive outlook and extreme will-power aided him through a long and difficult road. Although he lost the battle to cancer on August 2, 2010, his smile and spirit lives on...
My husband Mark was inspired to organize a team of 8 riders in 2009 after reading about the PMC during one of his father’s chemotherapy visits. The team has nearly tripled to 23 riders this year, and has currently raised over $210,000. We are hoping to exceed $400,000 this year with your help. I ride not only for Don Govoni, but also in memory of my grandparents Victor Caserta and Jack & Lorraine Mitchell, who have also lost the battle to cancer.
For the second consecutive year, The Captains Crew will be joined by our Pedal Partner, Julia Abreu. Julia is a 7 year old who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last spring and has been receiving treatment at Dana-Farber. Her contagious smile (photo above) has been extremely motivating during our ride.
While there are many athletic fundraising events, the PMC is arguably the most successful in terms of the money raised and the percentage of funds it contributes directly to charity. I ask that you support me in this year's ride as we remember Don Govoni and all of those who have lost the fight to cancer. Thank you in advance for all your love and support.
