Getting diagnosed with cancer is the largest punch in the stomach you will ever receive. You can’t hear anything other than the “C” word, and your mind goes to all of the worst scenarios your imagination can contrive. When I was diagnosed with cancer nearly 18 years ago, a stranger in the parking lot saw my anxious tears and assured me that I had a great surgeon and not to worry. Someone very close to me welcomed me as one of the “Lucky Unlucky Ones,” just like her. I didn’t feel lucky, and didn’t want to be part of that tribe. Over the years, I’ve welcomed many of my friends and family to that tribe. And, sadly I’ve also watched many who were not so lucky. We feel powerless watching others suffer through their diagnosis. We send cards, make meals, say prayers, join our loved ones on appointments, and hope beyond hope that something will heal them. As one of the lucky ones, I can do even more. By riding in the Pan Mass Challenge, I know that the money I raise gives the unlucky ones the best research and medical care championed by Dana Farber. And, it gives us all hope. That is why I ride. This year marks the 15th time I will be riding in the Pan Mass Challenge, and I have raised over $133,000 for the Dana Farber/Jimmy Fund. Every single dollar raised goes directly to Cancer Research. Please consider donating to this very worthwhile cause, so every family is given the gift of a long and healthy life.
