Why I Ride ...
Dear Friends, July 2025
Cancer…just a few letters but such a traumatizing word. Anyone who has heard it before knows what a devastating impact it can have, not only on the patient but on all those around them. Cancer does not discriminate…. and it comes in so many forms that trying to find a cure for just one word is incredibly difficult.
Ever since my grandfather passed away from prostate cancer back in 1989, I have been determined to help find a cure for such a destructive disease. By riding my bike in my 29th Pan Mass Challenge this August, a 192-mile bicycle ride over two days, I will be raising money for Dana-Farber Cancer institute’s local affiliate, South Shore Health. This allows all patients to be treated right here in Weymouth with no need to travel all the way to Boston for superb care.
Knowing so many people over the years who have been treated for cancer, several years ago I started riding the PMC with ribbons on my back for each patient. Over the years, I have amassed over 80 ribbons, and they motivate me when the hills get steep and the road gets long. And just today I am adding another ribbon, one for my long time employee, Sean Maloney, who just passed yesterday after a short but valliant fight with bone cancer.
We must find a cure. Treatments are steadily improving but we must find a way to eradicate cancer. I am proud to say that over the years Dana- Farber has generated more than 50% of all cancer treatments in the world. 50%!!!! The Pan Mass Challenge alone has given over ONE BILLION DOLLARS to Dana-Farber since 1984. If you have donated to me over the past 29 years, please take pride in knowing you are part of the reason Dana-Farber is making such big strides toward finding a cure.
Every survivor and even those who have lost the battle continue to push me toward my goal of $16,000.00. We will find a cure for this horrible disease. Please help by making your check out to PMC-Jimmy Fund or log on to my link http://www2.pmc.org/profile/LB0026
