Why I Ride ...
Dear Friends, June 2023
I was recently asked “Why do you continue to ride the Pan Mass Challenge after 28 years?” I replied with, “This disease affects everyone, young and old, directly or indirectly and is the second largest killer in the US. It must be stopped.” Fortunately, the way we now treat cancer has improved dramatically since my first ride in 1995. Although we are getting closer to a cure, we are still a long way away from eradicating cancer.
This August 5th and 6th I will be riding my bicycle in the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) which will take me on a 192 mile trek from Sturbridge to Provincetown. It is the single largest fundraising event for Dana Farber, raising $66 million last year alone with 100% of all rider raised funds going directly to cancer care.
Each year I ride with ribbons on my back representing those around me who have battled cancer. I now have 55, including one ribbon in memory of my grandfather, Alvin Bicknell, as well as one in honor of my mother-in-law, Mary Carbone. This year I will be adding another, one for Chris Ferrante who recently passed away at the age of 56 after a long, courageous battle against cancer who was “the warrior of all warriors, a four-star General” when it came to his fight with the disease.
Riding the PMC gives me a chance to make a difference and keeping loved ones’ memories alive pushes me up those big hills and towards the finish line. I remind myself that the pain of my muscles will be temporary, but the funds I raise by riding all those miles will be critical for Dana Farber to save lives. I have chosen to again ride with Team South Shore Health which is the Dana-Farber section at our own local South Shore Hospital. 100% of your donation will go directly to help our local community fight Cancer.
Every survivor and even those who have lost the battle continue to push me toward my goal of $15,000.00. We will find a cure for this horrible disease. Please help by making your check out to PMC-Jimmy Fund or log on to my link http://www2.pmc.org/profile/LB0026

With your support and my bike, we will find a cure.
Thank you!
