Every year I go through the same process of remembering why I commit, why I choose to support the Jimmy Fund and evey year I start by having to lengthen the list of people I know who have lost their battle with cancer. Sadly, my list of "in Honor of" continues to grow. Deb Bradbury, Michelle Rice, Carl Myers, George Best, Katie, Jessie MacDonald and Trudy are seven friends that have lost their battle... seven reasons why I ride, and every year I will continue to ride in memory of them. Dawn Yoder, Aaron Rowe, Corey Hague, Uncle Rob, Rich Buckley and countless other people I know I ride in honor of. They have been lucky enough, and able to overcome the disease.
On the day after last years PMC, I found out that my closest friend from High School had been diagnosed with Lung Cancer and just recently one of my training partners is fighting his own fight.
This one's for you both, Seana and Raul.
Cancer is everywhere, invisible to most but it effects all of us, through our family or friends. Each passing year for me, it becomes more relevant, because more of my family and more of my friends are being afflicted with or succumbing to this deadly disease.... and I would strongly argue that your life, your family and your friends are being affected the same way.
I am asking for your support, your financial support of $5, $10, $50 or whatever dollars to help fight cancer. The money that I raise along with the 5,500 other PMC riders will support the DANA FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE - a leader in the research and treatment of cancer, in all its forms and for anyone stricken...especially children. This year, I, along with the rest of Team Perkins/GFS will be trying to raise $200,000 for Dana Farber. Cancer is without a doubt the most relevant health problem facing our society. We have all been touched by this deadly disease and we need to continue to fund the scientists and geneticists that are tirelessly researching a cure. I'm not smart enough to find a cure, but we can certainly make sure that those who are...have the endless means to kick cancers ass!
Ride on.... Klete
