2025:

Well, another year brings another PMC. Initially, we talked in January about signing up for the final edition of the Sturbridge start but decided that, between my work schedule and other summer plans, it might be “too hectic”. In addition, the prospect of raising more than $6,000 was admittedly daunting.

But then….. cancer had other plans. During a routine appointment, wyz’s doctors found that her breast cancer had returned (get your mammograms, ladies!!!), and she had a bilateral full mastectomy at Memorial Sloane Kettering in NYC in April.

As many of you know, my mom has had cancer several times, but each time it has been “simple” surgical removal. This time, surgery was pretty major, and there was a possibility of needing treatment.

On our way to one of wyz’s followup appointments, we each mentioned that PMC had been on our minds and decided, fuck it. Raising money may be daunting, but cancer SUCKS. We signed up in the waiting room.

At that appointment, wyz was somewhat expecting her surgeon to say “good job, yay you’re done, don’t forget to keep coming back for check-ups!” Instead, they made her an appointment with an MSK oncologist (who is amazing, btw!!).

As we left that appointment, my strong mom looked at me and said “I feel like I have big kid cancer now”.

We went to Greece, as planned, in June and had a wonderful time. After we returned, we learned at the next oncology appointment that the prognosis is GREAT, but wyz is having chemo. Today is day 1!

This will be my 5th PMC, and Wyz’s 7th. I am so lucky that I get to ride this event with my ass-kicking, hell-raising, cancer-beating mom (yes, she’s riding too; yes, she’s nuts).

I have said since our first ride in 2017 that the people make the PMC special: the other riders, the volunteers, the passers-by who cheer us on despite sitting in traffic created by our ride, and YOU! Every person who donates makes this ride special, because that's what actually makes the impact (and – bonus! – you don't even have to stick your butt-cheeks to the saddle of a road bike for 200 miles!). The goal is $20k between the two of us to kick cancer's ass! Any amount can help, and 100% of rider-raised dollars go directly to research and treatment at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
