Hello Dear Family and Friends,
I am back on the bike! This will be my 19th riding of the Pan Mass Challenge and the power of pedaling continues to inspire and surprise me. When I think I can no longer climb those hills, don my (too tight!) spandex, or pedal the last few miles of a ride, I think of everyone in the throes of cancer and all the cancer stories I have heard and witnessed over the past 26 years since my own initial diagnosis. So along with my loyal partner and husband Phil, we will pedal again this August 2+3 to keep their stories alive and raise awareness and funding for Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI).
Why the PMC? Since 1980, over $1 billion has been raised through the incredible good that comes from pedaling like crazy on a hot August weekend. For those of us dealing with cancer, past or present, it helps fund breakthroughs and provides clinicians freedom to step outside traditional approaches and take educated risks, often leading to unexpected discoveries in the world of cancer. Discoveries that go from DFCI labs directly to impact patients. Pedal by pedal, the PMC helps researchers build better, less toxic, more innovative and effective interventions for those in Boston, around the country and the world. It brings us the essential gifts of time and hope with the goal of giving everyone in this often frightening community many more birthdays to celebrate.
Like cancer, the PMC is far bigger than any one person. Here is a bit of the surprise and essence of the weekend:
This year federal funding cuts to NIH and in turn to Dana Farber are impacting the science, pace, and opportunities to advance the progress made towards cancer care, outcomes and ultimately prevention.
