Why I Ride ...
This year I'm excited to take on the challenge of riding in the PMC. I will be riding with Paul, our friends Mark Gifford and Beth Ripp, and the Cisco Systems Team.
I am dedicating my ride to a very good friend of mine who is a proud breast cancer survivor. She inspired all of us with her strength and positive attitude. I will carry her strength (and hopefully her cheerful attitude!) with me through the 192 miles on August 6th and 7th.
The average rider is 43 years old and will raise $6000 from 40 donors. While you can't help me get any younger, would you consider helping me meet my goal of $6000?
The Pan Mass Challenge is a truly special event. It is the largest athletic fundraiser in the country with approximately 5000 riders from 36 states and 8 countries participating in the ride across Massachusetts. 3000 volunteers will provide support. $34,000,000 is expected to be raised from almost 250,000 donors. 100% will be donated to The Jimmy Fund and to The Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
In 2009, Paul and I went to the check dedication ceremony at The House of Blues. There was a huge check about 10 feet long that we all danced with - it was very funny! Hearing the story of Billy Starr and how he started the PMC was interesting. But what stuck with me was when the director of Dana Farber explained that the PMC donation has no strings attached, and that is what makes it so important to them. Dana Farber decides how to use the millions for whatever is the most urgently needed in their quest for a cure. There is no red tape. They can hire the very best researchers from around the world; they can invest in breakthrough technology and equipment; they can focus on rare cancers, or direct more funds toward a cancer treatment on the verge of success.
