Hi everyone,
On Saturday August 3rd, with my husband Renny, I will be riding the PMC as Living Proof for the fourth year in a row after being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in January, 2021.
I am riding to celebrate my life and to give back to Dana Farber and the Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers. Because of the world-class care that I received there, I am now cancer free. I have been back many times for follow-up visits since I completed treatment there, always leaving in a state of gratitude after receiving the news that my good health has remained. The last follow-up I had was just a few months ago, and I had a longer than usual wait time. While I might normally spend the time scrolling, this day I put my phone down and took a moment to look around the room. There were families and friends with loved ones, young and old, many patients with no hair, many who looked tired, sad, hopeful, scared. I was once each one of them, and this year I am riding for them all.
I am riding for my cousin, Megan who was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer while I was still undergoing chemotherapy in 2021. Despite the care and treatment that she received, she lost her battle several months later. She was 39 years old.
I am riding for my friend and Pepperdine classmate, Lisa, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer last year.
I am riding for my friend and neighbor Barbara who lost her battle with cancer this last April.
I am riding for my friend, a mother of three young children who learned that she has the BRCA gene, and all of the health challenges and decisions that come with that.
I am riding for all of my friends and family who have been diagnosed with and impacted by cancer, there are too many to list. I am celebrating those of us who are winning. I am honoring and remembering so many who did not.
The spiritual energy of this event is hard to describe. The joy, sorrow, solidarity, support and camaraderie shared between over 6,400 riders is palpable and somehow feels intimate. It is my honor and a blessing to be healthy enough to participate in this ride with Renny, and to contribute to the funds that make cancer survivorship like mine possible. I intend to ride with Team Duncan every year to give back and show gratitude for my immeasurable gift of life and good health. I hope you'll celebrate with me and support me in this endeavor.
With warmth and gratitude,
Jenny
