In my first year riding the PMC, I'm humbled to be riding with Team CRUS11TOUR. Since its inception, Team CRUS11TOUR has raised $6.1 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I have been a supporter from affar of CRUS11TOUR for several years and have finally caught the bug to join the PMC and help the fight against cancer. CRUS11TOUR rides in honor of David (Davey) Hovey. Davey tragically passed away at the age of 27 after a 16-month battle with Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme. Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer that has limited research funding and pharamceutical support. 100% of funds raised by CRUS11TOUR go towards the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for brain cancer research, specifically research being conducted by Davey's doctor, Dr. David Reardon. CRUS11TOUR is derived after Davey's determination and grit to "crush" this disease and incorporates his number 11 he wore while captaining the St. Lawrence lacrosse team.
CRUS11TOUR MISSION:
To raise much needed funds to support brain cancer research. This is a niche cancer, where research funding and pharmaceutical support is more limited than one would expect. Money raised through CRUS11TOUR goes into two funds (Current Use and Endowed) designated for brain cancer research, which have been established at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
BACKGROUND:
CRUS11TOUR is the name that David (Davey) Hovey gave to his battle against Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Davey grew up in Simsbury, CT and Chatham, MA. He graduated from Westminster School and then St. Lawrence Univ., where he captained the Lacrosse team in 2013. He was just 25 years old when he was diagnosed and fought bravely through multiple surgeries, seizures and treatments as he had every intention of “crushing” his tumor. Sadly, Davey passed away after a courageous 16-month battle. During this time, he partnered with Golf Fights Cancer, raising substantial funds through participation in their 100-hole Golf Marathon (June 2016) as well as initiating a 9 member Boston Marathon Team (April 2017). He left behind a loving family and many close friends, all of who have vowed to keep his CRUS11TOUR legacy alive. His strength and competitive spirit have motivated many to raise money for important brain cancer research, specifically being conducted by Dr. David Reardon and his team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Davey taught us many valuable lessons during his battle with cancer: the importance of family and friends, giving back, and always to “Keep the Faith”!! CRUS11TOUR never ends!
