In my second year riding the Pan-Mass Challenge, I’m honored to once again join Team CRUS11TOUR, a group that has collectively raised over $6.1 million for brain cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
I first supported CRUS11TOUR from afar, inspired by their purpose and passion. Last year, I took the leap and joined the ride. I’m back again this year, even more excited to be a part of such an incredible event with CRUS11TOUR.
CRUS11TOUR rides in memory of David “Davey” Hovey, who passed away at just 27 years old after a courageous 16-month battle with Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme - an aggressive and underfunded form of brain cancer. Our team directs 100% of every dollar raised to Dana-Farber, supporting cutting-edge research led by Dr. David Reardon, Davey’s physician and a leader in glioblastoma treatment.
The name CRUS11TOUR is a tribute to Davey’s determination to crush cancer and the number 11 he proudly wore as captain of the St. Lawrence University lacrosse team. Riding with this team is a privilege and I’m proud to carry forward Davey’s legacy and fight for a future without brain cancer.
CRUS11TOUR MISSION:
To raise much needed funds to support brain cancer research. This is a niche cancer, where research funding and pharmaceutical support is more limited than one would expect. Money raised through CRUS11TOUR goes into two funds (Current Use and Endowed) designated for brain cancer research, which have been established at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
BACKGROUND:
CRUS11TOUR is the name that David (Davey) Hovey gave to his battle against Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Davey grew up in Simsbury, CT and Chatham, MA. He graduated from Westminster School and then St. Lawrence Univ., where he captained the Lacrosse team in 2013. He was just 25 years old when he was diagnosed and fought bravely through multiple surgeries, seizures and treatments as he had every intention of “crushing” his tumor. Sadly, Davey passed away after a courageous 16-month battle. During this time, he partnered with Golf Fights Cancer, raising substantial funds through participation in their 100-hole Golf Marathon (June 2016) as well as initiating a 9 member Boston Marathon Team (April 2017). He left behind a loving family and many close friends, all of who have vowed to keep his CRUS11TOUR legacy alive. His strength and competitive spirit have motivated many to raise money for important brain cancer research, specifically being conducted by Dr. David Reardon and his team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Davey taught us many valuable lessons during his battle with cancer: the importance of family and friends, giving back, and always to “Keep the Faith”!! CRUS11TOUR never ends!
