In Loving Memory of My Husband, Jeff - July 30, 1950-October 11, 2009
The hardest part of the ride is the end, when he's not there waiting for me.
WHY I RIDE in 2018...….In 2017 within 7 months my family, both immediate and extended, each felt the loss of a parent, spouse, aunt, uncle, cousin and sibling. Whenever we experience such loss, we have an overwhelming sense of feeling vulnerable. It’s human nature to immediately focus on who and what we’ve lost. It isn’t until the smoke clears that we remind ourselves of all the things we should be thankful for both past and present, and turn our focus to the many blessings we still have.
Last year with much encouragement from family and friends only 5 days after my own mother’s passing; I took my place once again among hundreds of other PMC riders. Year after year, we are strangers at the beginning of the ride but friends by the end. Last year I admit I hadn’t properly prepared for the ride and struggled a bit. At the end of the day however, it didn’t matter as my goal and that of my supporters, was to fulfill the commitment that we, yes not me, but all those who supported me had made. It’s those times that we are reminded with clarity how lucky we are.
In the months to follow good news began to surround our family. One son became engaged to a wonderful girl and plans for a 2018 wedding would become the new focus. Then my other son and daughter-in-law announced they are expecting their first child, and in 2018 I will become a grandmother! However, as the saying goes, two steps forward and one step back. That step back was when my sister who was for several years on what I’ll call a “pre-cancer watch list”, told us that she had a melanoma on her left arm. On July 17, the plan was to begin treatment for the existing melanoma including removal followed by a form of chemo. In addition two other areas would be biopsied at the same time. We chose of course to look optimistically to the future and hope for the best. UPDATE: my sister’s melanoma was removed with CLEAR margins all around and no invasion. A biopsy of the right shoulder showed a typical mole to be watched for now, and margins were clear. A biopsy of the left shoulder however, discovered that the margins were NOT CLEAR and it was determined to be a Basal Cell Carcinoma. A revision of the area on August 8 will provide more clarity on the next step.
So on July 15, 2018 the final day of registration for the PMC, I decided to sign up to ride again to do whatever I can to help try to make a difference. Every effort and every dollar counts, so if you are reading this, whatever your motivation is, your support is greatly appreciated by me and too many others we will never know or meet.
Cancer is relentless but so too are we in our determination and commitment to find a cure for all cancers someday. Until then we keep pedaling and getting Closer By the Mile.
Thank you for your past and continued support and generosity.
Warmest regards,
Janet

August 6, 2017 - My Mother, My Guardian Angel – Constance “Connie” Wingard – December 24, 1930 – August 1, 2017
This year due to family priorities and pressures, as important as it is, I didn't think that I could make the commitment this year to do the training and fundraising that is in all riders opinion, the hardest of the two things to do. But when another of my Aunt's was diagnosed earlier this year with stage 4 lung cancer, it hit home again HARD. How could I not? She was given 6 months to live and has been one of my staunchest supporters. So I registered at the 11th hour on June 30 just under the wire and had minimal, really no training time but I knew somehow that thinking of her, my husband, Jeff and the many others that I hold dear in memory and heart that I would do it. I did and while I only rode one day this year, at the end of the ride I still felt proud and honored to be able to ride and that it would make a difference some day, somehow.
We all have to believe it will some day.
While I had no time to even make an effort to fundraise this year, I am so overwhelmed and grateful for the support that I continue to receive these 10 years later. Unsolicited I received donations once again from people who I had no idea were aware that I was riding this year. I am beyond fortunate to have all that I have in my family, friends, coworkers and thankfully good health.
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY!
My prayers and hopes are that fewer and fewer of us will be plagued by this awful disease and will someday soon find the means to a cure.

On the road again………August 6 & 7, 2016
Dear Family & Friends,
On August 6 & 7 I’ll be on the road again when I will join approximately 6,000 cyclists in the annual PMC bike-a-thon. The goal of this event is to raise money for cancer research for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI). This will be my 6th ride and 9th year volunteering with the PMC and I am reaching out to you again to ask for your support. My two day ride will span approximately 182 miles and based on my chosen route, my personal commitment again this year is to raise $4,300. The many dollars raised during this event enable continued research to fight this deadly disease and bring us closer to a cure. One hundred percent of the funds raised by the PMC go directly to the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Closer By The Mile
August 3 & 4, 2013 In Memory of My Husband, Jeff July 30, 1950-October 11, 2009 The hardest part of the ride is the end, when he's not there waiting for me.
Dear Family & Friends,
Once again this year I've committed to raising money for cancer research by riding in the 2013 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). On August 3 & 4, I will join 5,500 cyclists in an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI. My personal commitment again this year is to ride almost 200 miles over the two day period and to raise $4,300. This will be my 5th ride and 7th year volunteering with the PMC. In addition to all those whose memory and honor I continue to ride for, this year I dedicate my 2013 ride to three. In Memory of my mother-in-law, Barbara Mooney who we lost last August to another horrible disease, Alzheimer’s; and my aunt, Phyllis Mooney who in February within days of being diagnosed succumbed to Mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos. Still fighting the battle and whose honor I am riding in this year is my friend, Deb Barrette. Last fall instead of preparing to retire from the Army Reserves after 24+ years, celebrate her 60th birthday and wind down her working career as a Registered Nurse instead learned that she would be preparing for surgery and treatment as she too, was diagnosed with lung cancer.
For anyone who has known someone who has gone through treatment for cancer you know the many ways it can affect them. One such way is of course to affect the immune system and to weaken the body’s defenses. For example, many become more sensitive to the cold and often feel chilled. In consideration of this, three handmade afghans have been donated to raffle off as part of my fundraising campaign. One of these was hand knit by my friend Deb and two crocheted by my mother.
* * * * * * * * * RAFFLE * * * * * * * * * *
Handmade Afghans - (3 to be awarded)
v For every $25 donation a raffle ticket in the donor’s name will be submitted into a drawing for one of the afghans.
Ø For example: $25 = 1 ticket, $50 = 2 tickets, etc.
$100 American Express Gift Card - (2 to be awarded)
v For every $50 donation made a raffle ticket in the donor’s name will be submitted into a drawing for one of the gift cards.
Ø For example: $50 = 1 ticket, $100 = 2 tickets, etc.
Please note: For donations of $50 or more raffle tickets will be submitted for both the afghan and gift card prize drawings as outlined above, increasing the number of chances to win. Drawings will be held after the PMC in August and winning donors will be notified.
Your donation is tax deductible and 100% will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. If you prefer to write a check, please make it out to the PMC, The Jimmy Fund or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and mail it to me directly at: Janet Mooney, 106 Cumberland Avenue, North Attleboro, MA 02760. Every dollar brings us Closer By The Mile.
Thank you so much for your support.
Sincerely,
Janet Mooney

In Memory of My Husband, Jeff (July 30, 1950-October 11, 2009) The hardest part of the ride this year will be the end, when he's not there waiting for me. I ride because if you have ever had the grave misfortune of being touched by cancer, whether it is you or someone you love then you know the devastation it brings. To hear the words you have cancer is chilling enough but to hear I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do; I suggest you drop everything.... are words that I would never wish for anyone to ever have to hear. These very words were said to me on September 15, 2009, one of many days I will never forget.
On February 14, 2010 we would have celebrated 4 years of Jeff 's remission with stomach cancer. But while we were so diligent with testing every three months, watching the front door so to speak, a second primary form of cancer snuck in the back door. A non-small cell form of lung cancer, unrelated to his first cancer in any way. A form of lung cancer that goes undiagnosed more often than not until it is too late.
In this same year within months of each other I saw two of my closest life long friends each lose a parent to cancer. Two different forms of cancer; taking them relatively quickly and with little warning. While they have come far with research, trials and some cures, there is still much work to be done with and about this deadly disease. It seems that it is no longer something that happens to someone else but something that happens to all of us at some point in some way.
As much as anyone, I recognize that times are tough for many of us in today's economy but please remember that no contribution is too small. Every dollar counts and every dollar goes directly to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I ask for your support and I hope that you will contribute to this most worthy cause and support the Pan Mass Challenge and those of us who ride for those who can't.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support and please feel free to pass this message along. Even if you are not able to offer your financial support this year, perhaps someone you know may.
Donations are tax deductible and can be made by check or online by credit card. Checks should be made payable to the PMC, Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) or Jimmy Fund and sent to me at: 106 Cumberland Avenue, North Attleboro MA 02760. ****2008****
In Memory of
Richard Poor and Owen Freeman
August 5, 2007 4:00 a.m. - I fell asleep for approximately 45 minutes at 11:30 p.m. only to wake and watch the hours on the clock slowly pass. In 30 minutes my alarm would go off and it would be time to get ready to report to the Mass Maritime Academy (MMA) for my first ride with the Pan Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) from Bourne to Wellesley, MA. If I wasn't sure if I could do it before, not sleeping the night before certainly gave me cause to doubt it now. Adrenaline however, is an amazing thing and so at 5:15 a.m. I was up and out and on my way to MMA to join thousands of others at the pre-dawn hour to watch the sunrise and greet the day. As we lined up and began to depart the field, some riders turned left to head to their Wellesley destination while others turned right headed for Provincetown.
As I settled into my ride, I began to delight in the sense of accomplishment that all of these people came together for, and that I was fortunate enough in some way to be a part of. I thought of everyone who was supporting me in this endeavor and as such, was every bit as much a part of every mile I rode as if they were on a bike with me. I thought of those especially that I was riding in honor and in memory of. Those same people will be with me again this year in heart, mind and spirit. Sadly however, my ride this year will be in memory of Richard (Dick) Poor, another family member who this month of March lost his very brave and desperate battle with cancer and, my friend Owen Freeman who in December lost his 5+ year battle with Leukemia. One up note here is that for year two my husband continues to be in remission and doing very well.......and so that's how it goes with cancer.
To everyone who so generously sponsored my maiden voyage with the PMC last year and contributed to the overwhelming success of this program, I can't thank you enough and hope that you will consider sponsoring me again this year. The 29th annual 2008 PMC is set for August 2 and 3. This year I will participate in both days of this event beginning in Wellesley, MA and finishing in Provincetown for the 163 mile trek. This year's journey will slightly double the number of miles I rode last year. Let the training begin.....?
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support and feel free to pass this along.

-------2007 Year #1--------
The American Cancer Society recently reported that in 2007, 1,444,920 new cancer cases are expected in the United States. While numbers speak volumes, the message is truly driven home when cancer affects us directly.
On January 24, 2006, my husband, Jeff and I were told never expecting to hear the worst, that he had cancer. The ulcer or acid reflux we thought he would be diagnosed with would have been good news by comparison. While the speed with which we were encouraged to act was quick, it wouldn't be quick enough for us. We wanted it gone and behind us never realizing the long road to recovery he faced. Jeff never complained always responding to the doctor's directions with 'okay, let's do it'. A year later on February 12, 2007, we received the good news that he is in remission.
I've watched friends say goodbye to family members one after another to some form of cancer and in the past two years we have lost two aunts and an uncle. One dear friend recently lost her 17 year young nephew to the deadly disease taking his life far too soon. The message is clear that cancer fears and discriminates against no one and like people, comes in all shapes and sizes. It was through my friend that I learned of The PMC, a fund raising event that her family had become involved in.
This August though not quite the challenge that Jeff faced, I plan to embrace a 'Challenge' myself and participate in my first PMC. My goal through your help and others is to raise a minimum donation amount of $2,600 to earn the right to ride with these amazing people on Sunday, August 5 in a 47 mile loop beginning and ending in Wellesley, MA. Due to the overwhelming response that the PMC attracts registration was already closed to me for other routes. Next year - I plan to register early.
Donations are tax deductible and can be made by check or online by credit card.

One hundred percent of the funds raised by the PMC go directly to the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
To learn more about the PMC or to donate online, please visit my PMC profile at http://www.pmc.org/profile/JM0474. Please reference my eGift ID# JM0474. Your donation is tax deductible and 100% will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
* * * * * * * * * RAFFLE * * * * * * * * * *
