Dear friends and family,
As I prepare and train for my third Pan Mass Challenge Bike Ride to raise money for cancer research, I am inspired by the progress that organizations like Dana Farber Cancer Institute have made. I remain hopeful that new cures and treatments for many cancers will be discovered, tested, and implemented each year to save the lives of so many people in this world who are afflicted with various kinds of cancer. My mother, who died of Breast Cancer in 2021, was my motivation to ride and every year I ride in her honor, BUT too many friends, family members and neighbors continue to fight this disease, or have lost their lives to cancer. It is too frequent. It is too common. A father, a mother, a grandmother/grandfather, a sibling or God forbid a son/daughter or child have been suddenly afflicted with this disease. I am shocked each year when we get surprised by the sudden loss of someone dear to us, who had cancer!
So, what can we do??? We can educate ourselves; we can try and lead healthy lifestyles, we can take action if we don’t feel right, and we can support the talented, driven, and motivated cancer researchers that are striving to eradicate this disease from the earth. We know we can’t eliminate cancer completely, as cells mutate outside of our control, but we can proactively do things to reduce our risk, we can proactively get screenings to catch cancer early, and we can donate to this cause so that maybe someday, we’ll have stem cell treatments or gene replacement therapies that can replenish our good cells and kill the bad.
I admire all the scientists, doctors, nurses, and all those that work in this field. I admire their tenacity to search for cures. I admire their curiosity to find alternative methods of treatment to minimize the impact of chemotherapy and even incorporate holistic/natural forms of treatment. I admire the compassion that surrounds their patient care. I admire the families, friends, neighbors, and caregivers that help bring strength to those fighting this disease and above all, I admire the patient (past, present and future) that fight for their lives, fight to extend their lives for their loved ones, participate in experimental treatments to advance research and hope for a cure, and who find the strongest inner strength to persevere through very difficult and painful times. We learn, we grow, we develop empathy, we test our love and patience, we grieve…but we never stop trying. THIS is WHY I ride the PMC each year! This is what motivates me, and this is why I would love for you to join me to raise awareness, raise funds and advance cancer research to find cures and help those challenged by this disease to fight it, endure it, and hopefully kick cancer’s butt!
The PMC this year is August 3rd and 4th. We will ride approximately 200 miles across Massachusetts for this ride. The PMC remains the world’s largest athletic-based fundraising event and 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research and treatment. This year the PMC’s goal is $75M, which WHEN achieved, will cumulatively surpass $1 Billion dollars raised for Cancer Research! Every dollar raised goes to research and treatment. That is why they are calling it the PMC One in a Billion Ride for 2024! My personal goal is to raise a minimum of $6,000 and I will strive to raise $10K. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s research has done so much to advance treatment protocols and advance our understanding of cancer. Their efforts help the world fight to cure this terrible disease while increasing our understanding of the genetic markers that will hopefully allow the medical field to target its cure.
If you are able, I would welcome your support again this year. I will ride for every survivor. I will ride for those currently fighting cancer. I will ride for those in heaven who are now our guardian angels. I will be riding again this year, as part of the Marshfield RAMS team, alongside my sister, brother-in-law and nephew and many new and dear friends. I’m excited for the challenge. I’m thrilled that I remain healthy to take on this bike ride. With our collective help and dedication to finding a cure, I pray that my girls won’t have to worry about losing their lives to this terrible disease, but that medical research will advance to have genetic-based treatments to stop cancer cell replication in its tracks! I’m not a doctor, so this may take a while, but we all must do our part to KILL cancer before it affects us!
If you wish to donate, I will be grateful for any contribution you are able to make. If you cannot help financially, I will welcome any positive reinforcement along the way!!! You can log on to www.pmc.org and click on egifts and enter my PMC ID number: JK0498. Please keep in mind that many of your employers may have a matching gift program. You can request a matching gift form & enclose it with your contribution. If you would like to send a check, please make it out to PMC & mail to me at 5801 Cruiser Way, Tampa FL 33615. Thank you in advance for your support to help find a cure!
Much love,
Janet
