PAN MASS CHALLENGE 2024
JOHN GLOWACKI'S 2024 PMC RIDE
This coming August 3rd I will be setting out on my 10th Pan Mass Challenge ride from Sturbridge to Bourne, riding 111 miles in the course of a single day to raise greatly needed funds for patient care and cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
2024 is going to be one very special year. Not only will this be my 10th anniversary ride, but this is also the year that the PMC is projected to go over the $1 billion dollar mark all time for fundraising. A billion dollars, from a bunch of folks riding bikes every August since 1980. Having a chance to be a part of this is something I could certainly not pass up. What a tremendous achievement that does benefit each and every one of us.
Odds are, every single one of us has had their life impacted by cancer either directly or indirectly. Five years ago I wondered if I'd be sitting here today as a cancer survivor. Hearing the words “You Have Cancer” from your doctor is surreal, it’s a life altering moment none of us wish to experience. When you think about that you realize just how important the PMC is to the research community. The PMC has raised $972 million dollars since 1980. The PMC is the number one athletic fundraising event in the country. The PMC donates 100% of every rider raised dollar to Dana Farber, every single dollar. Not one penny is spent on advertising, middle men or overhead. Remarkable this day and age.
It's hard to believe that what started out 10 years ago as what was supposed to be a one time thing evolved into so much more. There is something very special about this experience. Once you start you cannot stop. Once you are in and see the great work being done it's impossible to walk away. The sense of accomplishment cannot be put into words. This is so much more than a bike ride. Each year the expectations become bigger and bigger. Each year we rise to exceed those expectations. I have no doubt this year will be any different.
