Why I Ride ...

During my lifetime I have met only two kinds of people - those whose lives have been touched by cancer and those whose lives have not (yet). Unfortunately I've met many more people in the first category than in the second, and with each passing year the score becomes more lopsided.

For many years, I myself was in that second category and thought about cancer the same way that I thought about poverty, hunger and war - all terrible things that I was happy to know that other people were working to eliminate some day from the world. Then in February 2015, my wife Maureen and I learned that she was battling cancer (multiple myeloma). In that moment cancer became intensely personal and immediate. That got me out of my arm chair and onto my bicycle. This year I am riding in my eleventh PMC (Wellesley to Bourne on August 2).

There was a moment during my first PMC ride in 2015 that I think I will remember as long as I can remember anything. I had just crossed into Middleborough from Carver at about 7:30 AM or so. Standing by the roadside outside of a home were a young woman and two little girls - I assumed they were mother and daughters. The smallest child, with a completely bald head, held a homemade sign that said “Survivor”; the other child a few years older held a sign that said “We believe in a cure”; and the woman held a sign that said “Thank you PMC”.

So back to Maureen. In 2015, an internet search for multiple myeloma would have told you that this form of cancer was terminal with a frighteningly short runway. Maureen's doctors at Dana-Farber, however, told us that they had some ideas for her. Over the past ten years Maureen has benefitted from a stream of new therapies that have kept her cancer in check. Most recently in June 2021 Maureen participated in a clinical trial of a new form of CAR-T therapy, and as I write this her myeloma is undetectable.
