On August 2nd and 3rd I'm riding my 12th Pan-Mass Challenge -- a 192 mile bike ride (over two days) that raises money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in its mission to both treat and eliminate cancer. Each year thousands of riders come together to raise millions of dollars that end up supporting patients, researchers, and families, with 100% of the funds raised by riders going directly to programs. I've committed to raise at least $6,000, and I would love to have your support.
In recent years I've lost close family and friends to cancer, and the numbers say that's likely true for many of you. I'm riding in memory of aunts and uncles; of grandparents; of friends who fought cancer while raising small children; and some who never had the chance.
Any amount you're able to give is a meaningful and important step in the fight against cancer. I would really appreciate your donation, if you're in a position to give.
My ride this year is going to be a very different one than the last 11. In March I fractured my patella, and had to have surgery to place screws and a plate to help it knit back together.
The first question I asked at my first consult was whether riding the PMC seemed like it would be possible, and the answer then was that it was unlikely but not entirely out of the question. Through four initial weeks of complete immobility post-surgery, and 14 weeks (and counting!) of grueling physical therapy to regain flexion in the knee, I've been focused on making it possible to ride from Sturbridge to Bourne on the weekend of August 2nd and 3rd.
I've only been physically capable of riding a bike for about 15 days now. My muscles are far, far weaker than they were. But thanks to an excellent surgical team and a truly wonderful PT who knows how to push me, I'm cleared to ride. I'll be far slower than past years and I'll be pushing the limits of my endurance, but I'm committed to making it through. As hard as recovery from this injury has been, the reality is that it's far easier than what basically any patient at Dana-Farber has to go through.
My goal for this year is to raise at least $6,000 -- and to get there, I need your help. Any amount you can give is appreciated.
With love and appreciation,
Ian
