The first weekend in August is my favorite weekend of the year. I get to ride through the hills of Massachusetts, raising much needed funds to support cancer research. Participating in the PMC has been a life-changing event and its become a family affair - my nephew Gavin will be joining me, for the third time (he wants to make a difference and is hooked too)! As a survivor, I know first hand the benefits of cancer research... I am living proof that supporting institutions like Dana Farber Cancer Institute is critical - so for the 19th consecutive year I will ride 186 miles, envisioning a world without cancer. I can't do this without you and I'm sooo appreciative of your support.
It's so frustrating to think about how many people have been affected by this awful diseases. Yet our efforts are making a difference - earlier detection, more tolerable treatments, extending life expectancies and cures have increased over the years and continue to do so... and THAT'S WHY I RIDE!
My PMC journey began to honor my Mom, and two years ago I lost Oppie, one of my closest friends to this dreadful disease. I will forever ride in their memory. I think of them often and regularly feel their presence on my training rides and throughout the PMC weekend. And as in previous years, my ride is dedicated to those who have had a recent diagnosis or recurrence of this devastating disease… so this year I'll proudly ride “In Honor Of” Barbara ( whose had to deal with cancer for the second time, Faith and Michael. Damn you cancer - we are going to kick your butt... Barbara, Faith and Michael - this one's for you!
Over the years I have also had the privilege to ride for many of you and your loved ones, and this year is no different. Send me the names of all your loved ones (or you) who have been touched by this disease, I'll proudly wear a ribbon around my waist (as you can see in the photo above) bearing his/her name to honor and memorialize them.
THANK YOU for your continued support and generosity… Yes - DAMN YOU CANCER – and thankfully we can help - each mile brings us closer to a cure… and remember, I can’t do this without you!
With much appreciation and gratitude,
Ivy
